"in, what to modern eyes constitutes a familiar pattern, this alleged utopia rapidly devolves into “some animals are more equal than others,”

Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it ... and mankind has a hard head to put it mildly. Since socialism is the slippery slide to communism, I think this applies:

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy. It's inherent virtus is the equal sharing of misery." -Winston Churchill (Allegidly)

To put a more finer point on it, here's how devestating this mentality/mind poison is from the father of communism himself:

"With disdain I will throw my gauntlet full in the fact of the world and see the collapse of this pygmy giant. Then will I wander god-like and victorious through the ruins of the world. And giving my words an active force, I will feel equal to the Creator." —Karl Marx, Father of Communism

Merit matters. With out it you give up on your future of being a productive member of society, and instead latch on to someone else's production like a parasite. That being said, capitalism is far from perfect as well. Without the Smith-Mundt act it swiftly devolves into slavery. <-- Since that act no longer applies, - we are here.

"The real "haves" are they who can acquire freedom, self-confidence, and even riches without depriving others of them. They acquire all of these by developing and applying their potentialities. On the other hand, the real "have nots" are they who cannot have aught except by depriving others of it. They can feel free only by diminishing the freedom of others, self-confident by spreading fear and dependence among others, and rich by making others poor."

That's genius, thank you.

They've been rendered incapable of swimming from the disempowering communistic creed - so they selfishly use and drag others down as their personal life raft.

You're welcome! Eric Hoffer is my favorite Philosopher an astute observer of Human Nature. "Love of power, operating through greed and through personal ambition, was the cause of all these evils."

Sorry to be obtuse, but how does the Smith -Mundt act prevent slavery under capitalism?

By keeping the only power capable of overpowering the republic (huge corporations) from joining together and doing just that.

"The Smith-Mundt Act, officially the United States Information and Educational Exchange Act of 1948, is a U.S. federal law aimed at promoting cultural and informational exchange with foreign nations."

I am confused.

Apologies Michele, I mean to say the Sherman Antitrust Act. I hope that clarification makes it clear. Thank you for pointing this out, I am grateful.
