I had a professor at Rutgers Grad School who was enamored with Eliot and taught a course solely on Eliot’s literature that I took. I could not understand the fascination but the light bulb went on with your article. This professor was an elite wannabe, living in New Jersey, teaching at the state university in Newark, but wishing for the elite education and life that Eliot and his ilk enjoyed. When he hired me to do research for him at the NY Public Library (taking my own car in Manhattan, paying tolls, gas, parking as well as incurring my own time), he was outraged that I charged him portal to portal and assessed the fees I incurred for the trip. He eventually paid me but never gave me another assignment. No wonder I later went to law school and have been hourly and expense billing for the past 27 years.
