I was in the class of 1984. We were assigned Orwell's book of the same name during one semester, maybe Freshman or Sophomore in my gifted and talented English classes. I was fortunate to have a teacher who took the time to go over the message it was telling us and to recognize the pigs and the farmers for who they were, and value the other creatures on the farm for who they were. A true non-egalitarian.

She was a 'unique' individual with traits and values that I hold today far more than I did when one of her students. And she taught G&T English for several grades, I think I had her for three years in a row. She even taught books written by Leo Buscaglia, like the book "Love."

She brought him into the classroom and showed videos of his speeches. I thought they were corny at the time, didn't understand the utility of teaching his message in HS English. As I've grown older my appreciation for that exposure to him through that teacher has grown. And I've carried those lessons in life even before I remembered and recognized he/the teacher were the original source.

Teachers who truly care and teach, 1984, Animal Farm, Love, can make a difference. I'm a living example.

I had a teacher like that his class was titled Literati. Great explorations. In answering a students question once he replied with: "so you are saying "trivia is essence" That really struck me. later in my art work I drew a seated buddha with the lines all done with a fine crow quill dip pen in the phrase "trivia is essence" over and over.

After graduation in 1969 he volunteered to drive 5 of us to the Newport Folk Festival. That was the true cherry on the top of my high school edjumacation.
