I assume from what you're saying - You're an American citizen who is living in Japan with wife & children. Is that right?
Would things be better / different if you renounced your citizenship to become a Japanese citizen? Would that solve any of your problems? Or am I mis-reading this here?
Have looked into that. Short answer is no. First, I can not meet the requirements for Japanese citizenship. If that was my goal when I came here many years ago, then yes, I probably could, but not now. Second, no, that would not relief me nor my family of the burden. Nor would a divorce.
