Is Bitcoin accepted in Japan?

The answer to this question is, "Yes, BUT..."

You may be surprised to find out that Japan is a predominantly cash-based society, many places in Japan still don't accept card - nevermind Bitcoin. Yes, cashless payment options have seen a rise in recent years, and yes, you will find stores in Japan that accept cryptocurrency like Bitcoin Cash (see examples listed below). However, despite Japan's official recognition of crypto, your options for spending Bitcoin here are still very limited.

These are the 8 places in Japan that accept bitcoin as of 2020, the latest such list I could track down.. Most are bars. One is a hair Solon.

1. Bic Camera

2. Hackers Bar

3. Dot Raw

4. T's Kitchen

5. Yukizaki

6. Mint

7. Jinanbou

8. Mezzo

There used to be BTM, Bitcoin ATMs, in Japan but a revision in the law outlawed them as they were then operated. They have since returned but to get and form of currency that I can use for monthly bills, groceries or gas, I must use an exchange which is no different that exchanging fiat currencies, cashing International Postal Money Orders or receiving wired money. It is reported not only to the local tax authorities, which is fine with me as I live here, but also to the US via FATCA as I am a US citizen. If I were Taiwanese, then it would be reported to Taiwan via OECD’s CRS. Just as FATCA was first implemented upon expats who have little to no representation in the US, which was then followed up within the reporting requirement for Venmo payments exceeding $600 for those living in the States, all these restrictions and data sharing with bitcoin for those of us who live abroad will eventually be used domestically.

Frankly, it seems like a trap. Once they get enough people dependent upon the various forms of crypto currencies, then they implement the controls they have built into the system and you are stuck.
