Yes, yes and yes! In the 1960s I was a teenager and watched a lot of crazy stuff coming out of the left, but they were constrained and you generally didn't find out what they were up to until after the fact, perhaps on the 5 or 6 pm news or in the next day's paper. There was no 24 hour news showing things live so their impact and power was lessened. I really do think the fringe loonies took off more recently precisely due to the internet and social media and the near constant exposure, you can't miss it. And that in turn gave them power they couldn't achieve before and it allowed them to influence the young gullible brains for of mush out there.
The fringe lunatics were always out there. It's just that the internet and social media artificially amplify the insanity.
