Thank you, Johnny t. I have been saying that (rather timidly I admit) for a decade now. Whenever I observe an indigenous blockade / protest in my country, I often marvel at the scene: what is being worn, the lovely car / truck/ plane / snowmobile that got them there, the smart phones in hand, the good dental work, nice sunglasses / watches / boots. But dare I say anything lest I be labelled whatever is currently chic.? One Cdn senator posted on her blog a letter from someone offering similar sentiments, and she was publicly chastised and severely reprimanded.
My step family is Native American. Enough so that they get free everything, even land if they want, but they won’t move to a rez.
Lots of hostility towards me when I first joined the family. Lots.
That’s changed as they’ve gotten older, and the other side has overplayed their hand.
My brother-in-law who is actually 100% native, was driving with me in the car and there was a protest. He flat out says, “yeah, fuck that. These people are idiots, I like the white mans television and tv and medicine. If they want to go live in the woods and pull rotten teeth out with sticks, then no one’s stopping them.”
That meant a lot to me, after a lifetime of anti-white abuse from certain segments of my family.
Never be afraid to stick up for yourself. Just stating facts has an impact you won’t see. I’ve had people tell me months and years later, “that thing you said stuck with me.”
