Pretty much my point - Trump ran with only one Billionaire backer. He ran as a republican and received no backing from the GOP - no money, no support (the GOP leadership was probably even more angry than the Clinton campaign ;-). Thus had no under the table obligations to either dominant party (which by 2016 really were one party with two names IMO).
And I am certain should DeSantis find a way to run outside the system as did Trump, he will be treated exactly the same way. Perhaps even worse, or at least, worse more effectively, as lessons have been learned since 2016 - they will start much sooner to bring the full weight of the federal government to stop him from the very start.
