The "green bay tree" is a quote from the Bible - well, paraphrasing - about how the wicked can flourish like the green laurel, which produces leaves and no fruit. I'm not a Christian these days but I read the Bible a lot as a kid and there are some great quotes to be found in it. The wicked often do seem to get ahead, unfairly.
