The bot reading you a number is what I was referring to with a phone call with authentication codes. That is part of the process of the multi factor authentication process. Something you know, your login and password, that's one part. Then something that you possess or control, that would be your phone. The code that gets read to you is the 2nd part of the multi factor or 2 factor authentication process. A physical token is simply the 2nd part of the process replacing the phone call with the code because you would possess or control the physical token. That token typically plugs into your computer when needed.

Ah, thank you. Well, as I've only needed to do that once in the past sixty-five years (fifty-nine of which were spent without the internet in my life) I'm not going to worry about it, I really don't feel the need to possess a cellphone. The one time I did need to go through the process I borrowed a friend's cellphone. He had to show me how to turn it on. Ishi lives!
