I think thats because they were used to having a monopoly on the means of communication.

I think that's more important today than the celebrated Marxian formula of monopoly in the means of production

Many American elites have a specific brain worm where they think everything in DC is supposed to run the way it was depicted on The West Wing. Polite Republicans who never say anything conservative and never win, the media and DNC colluding to hide the medical condition of the sitting President, etc, etc. (It is actually wryly funny that that exact collusion has now happened with 3 Democrat presidents and 1 fictional one).

Trump 2.0 is so far away from that framing that Aaron Sorkin can't save them now.
