But honestly after 8 I checked out for a good while. I haven't really connected to any since except 10. The reboot of 7 is very, very nice if you've got major nostalgia for the original and always wanted them to spend more time on character development and less time breeding goddamn chocobos for 40 hours of gameplay.
Yea, 10 was really something else. I still have my PS2 and a copy of that around for when my oldest wants to try out that sort of thing. Past that one though I largely lost interest. I might not even have played 11... was that one an MMO or something?
I might have to pick up the reboot of 7. I never played much if any of 7 (didn't have a console when it was out, and 8 was out by the time I had access) but it definitely holds the crown as most popular, so it has a lot recommending it.
Although damn, what is it with Japanese RPGs and animal breeding subgames? Is husbandry so popular otherwise that people are making specialty breeds of hamsters in tiny Tokyo apartments? If so, that's cool and all, but it almost always seems strangely out of place in most games. Pokemon makes sense to have it, but like FF7 or FF8... "We are going to take a break from staving off the inevitable destruction of the world for a bit to visit the petting zoo and see if we can find our bird horse a special friend..."
Oh yea! Vivi! I had to look up the name, but I had forgotten they had a classic black mage in the game. He was a charming little bugger. They had such good characterization back in the day.
I remember Vivi.
