Read Dominion by Tom Holland, and Pagan America by Jon Davidson, and you will understand that the fall of Western civilization is the result of the decline of Christian belief. Particularly, the value in defending the weak (women, but especially children) is not some self-evident truth that came out of Enlightenment thinking, but a belief that came from the teachings of Jesus Christ. As Christianity has fallen out of favor, so have its concomitant beliefs. Islam does not share these values and it never will.
The simple belief that we should treat others as we would want to be treated, is something that appears to be an alien idea. I remember once a year it my teachers in elementary school had a lesson on the golden rule, and it felt "trite" in my estimation as it was a given.
