One might ask how it has come to be that so many people actually believe that. So many will (blindly) accept the "free speech is bad" agenda. One might wonder, but not if you ask a middle school teacher, student, or look at their text books. For decades the curriculum (as approved by government) has been teaching this. Teaching that nothing good can happen without government doing it; that government control is better than everything else, that those who believe in freedom are dangerous outliers. And so we reap the crop those seeds have sown.
And reconsider the "greater good" of public education as it exists today. When I was younger I believed that raising the education level of more people was good for all of us. I still believe that, but I now can see (have experienced) the dangers in the idea. Like so many "seemed like a good idea at the time" situations, the execution is prone to corruption. The reason is the potential power there is in having control over education. The basic idea of making literacy common decayed into compulsory indoctrination.

Another reason to disband the dept of education- it was sweet being an educator before they got their hands into things

I am glad I retired...I wouldn't able to be quiet about some of the weird crap that is going on in schools today...
