I still believe that, but I now can see (have experienced) the dangers in the idea. Like so many "seemed like a good idea at the time" situations, the execution is prone to corruption. The reason is the potential power there is in having control over education. The basic idea of making literacy common decayed into compulsory indoctrination.
Another reason to disband the dept of education- it was sweet being an educator before they got their hands into things

I am glad I retired...I wouldn't able to be quiet about some of the weird crap that is going on in schools today...
