I just had an odd thing happened that scared me. The other side KNOWS there is power here on Substack and that we all become more hopeful and more powerful with our interactions. If they can disrupt our ability to talk to and support one another, then they can really screw with us and the election.

I just had 20 minutes where neither the app nor the browser loaded Substack or any of its pages or sections. I tried 5G and WiFi but it was down. My stomach clenched. I didn’t realize how important this space is to me, as are all of you. It got me to thinking how very upset I would be and how lost and alone I would feel to lose contact with all of you and all the writers.

I did rush over and find el Gato on X, but I can’t find anyone else there. Besides, X posts are limited in characters and it’s not conducive to the same kinds of discussions and information sharing in the same way Substack is. They both serve unique purposes. Substack IS alternative journalism and news!! We NEED Substack. And they are definitely going to be targeting it.

There's a lot of problems that would come downwind of a ban, but you wouldn't be cut off from the community, it would just shift to a different medium for a bit.

Yes, although I believe the technology was being developed while he was President. I remember reading an article about it at the time, but couldn't find a link to that one. It involved using ultra-violet light if I remember rightly. I have no particular issue with Trump, but my guess would be he was trying to sound smart by talking about a new development that was not widely known, but it kind of back fired on him. Plus I don't think anyone trying to profit from the "pandemic" wanted any alternatives to what they were trying to push on people.

Yes, I chose the name because of its associations, but I understand it may be a myth, which somehow seems appropriate under the circumstances 😉

Cathy Newman (Peterson's interviewer) has *always* been an airhead. As for Thierry Breton, as I replied to Xavier Azalbert of France Soir today, the ex-CEO of French industrial giants Groupe Bull, Thomson Consumer Electronics and Atos (all essentially bankrupt now) has a chip on his shoulder. Because he wasn't an "X" (Polytechnicien), he attacks the other "X". He's having a tantrum. He is not used to being disobeyed. Since Napoleonic times, the overriding goal of the French (men, essentially), is to scale the preordained hierarchy, win prizes, and shit on the plebs ranking below them. I worked there; I saw it. Breton failed upward over and over, but only when you consider failure in terms of business success, as opposed to political success. You have to have lived in France to realize in what esteem total mediocrities are held. I suspect the majority of French are cheering Breton on. And I say this as a Francophile.

i think your assessment is a good one.

it used to be how the french aristocracy fed itself.

a successful entrepreneur would basically sell them his whole business and achievements for a title and a sinecure. the value of "position" was so far above wealth or achievement or freedom.

french was the language of "nobility." the whole system was hierarchy and revolutions may come, but the character of the people has remained. what's sad is how germany and others have been so so opted by it. the EC is a nightmare of nanny state intrusion and propped up sub-mediocrity. it's just a lame, fetid aristocracy trying to sustain itself while taking much and offering nothing.

The EU is "greater Germany" in economic terms, and "greater France" in political and social terms. I am not the first person to say that. Italy and Spain, with low self-esteem, have always followed France's lead. Eastern Europe has not.

The French respect hierarchy. Yes, they riot (the Yellow Vests), and strike all the time, but they are very "socialized". (I'm not talking about immigrants.) Before 1789, the hierarchy was based on class. After 1800, Napoleon instituted an educational system where every student was required to learn and regurgitate exactly the same things, and those who did that the best, rose in grade and status. Independence of thought was severely frowned upon. Status was revered and rewarded. Rising in the hierarchy doesn't require any talent except for the ability to rise in the hierarchy. It was a meritocracy, but merit was defined by how well you passed various tests, intellectual, political, social. I didn't actually say they hold mediocrity in such esteem -- I said many mediocrities are held in esteem because they have successfully negotiated the hierarchy and therefore are deserving of respect. Your position defines your social status and therefore your worth. I could give dozens of examples of "know your place", but here is one: I used to be an equity analyst, and at a huge meeting of analysts/press for an Alcatel Alsthom press conference many years ago, I had the audacity to ask a panellist about some sleazy accounting. The hapless panellist didn't understand me. Then the CFO stood up 5 minutes later, and essentially publicly reprimanded me for daring to ask such a question. (Think Greta Thunberg!) I could hear the murmurs of disapproval (towards me) from the audience. I am not drawing an equivalence between status and mediocrity -- there are many talented people with high status (luxury goods, retailing, fashion, for example) -- I am just saying that status trumps everything else. The fact that a Frenchman rose to a position to be able to censor social media, because the EU imposes a 6% tax on worldwide revenues if it doesn't approve -- that impresses the French more than anything else. They don't care if he's a mediocrity. He made it, and he's sticking it to the world.
