Perhaps the best thing one can do today is to be prepared. Be prepared for as many contingencies and possible outcomes and directions America may take in the foreseeable future. Then wait and see what unfolds.
It became obvious to the colonists what needed to be done - that unfolding "long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object" made it undeniable. A similar long Train may make things obvious to present-day America sooner than later.
