I do think it is funny that they see safety on an island occupied largely by other useless rich people. Moats can protect, they can also trap you inside...
What islands do you refer to, baker charlie? I have family in the San Juans (fits your description) and I'm from Hawai'i (born in the Territory. Please don't get me started).
Thar she's blows! You know what; all you'll take is the memories. Let them sip on their pretentious lattes and banter about their contrived lives. I'm happy skipping that, and enjoying my days under the sun. F**k them and their fake plastic tree's.
You know, it's sad. Decades ago I used to enjoy making a bit of guacamole for myself and eating it with blue corn chips. Introduced an Afghani friend to it; she thought it was great. Now with all these morons having their self-induced erotic experiences over a piece of fruit, I've sort of skeeved right off it.
I know exactly what you mean. In NorCal, avocado toast isn't food, it's a sacrament. I have also heard said morons moaning in orgasmic ecstasy over utterly plain, unseasoned steamed kale ("OMG!!!") and raw zucchini without so much as a grain of salt. It's hard not to laugh out loud at such virtue-signaling theatre. Well, good luck with all of it - right now avos are $2.50 each ON SALE. They'd better find a new fetish.
It must have to do with where you live. When I was a church mouse-poor college student back home in Hawai'i I had a massive avocado tree in my yard, I could easily harvest 6 or 7 huge ripe avos every day. My bf and I lived on avocados, also mac and cheese, with some Vienna sausage thrown in when we were flush. This was in the 1980s, and yes we made avo toast back then. With Marmite on a big night.
Not in stores here, one must order online. I buy it in bulk. I tell the sig oth, who does not share my addiction (this is a good thing) that Marmite is poised to make a big comeback. I'm stocking up, jic - I get nervous when the jar dips below half-full.
My luggage was crammed full of the big-size jars when I returned home from the UK in 2016. That final breakfast...now I also order online. Elderflower syrup too. It's a great grief to me that I'll never see Tesco's again...
Here in Sweden they go for about 45:-/kilo to 95:-/kilo depending on origin, virtue signal labelling and such. That would be about $4.43 to $9.36 per 2.2lb I think?
I'm doing my share though - I don't eat them, never has and never will - I'd sooner use them for bait to bag me lean vegan soy-raised city-boy "The Hills have Eyes"-style... (cue sinister nyckelharpa)
We make soup from it. Only, instead of plain water we use pork droppings as in all the excess fat dripping of a pork roast or ham in the oven. That fat is made into a base for the soup and the finely chopped kale is simmered in it until cooked yet still crunchy. Served with hard boiled eggs in the soup, and black bread with salted butter, maybe pickled beetroots or a strong hard cheese on the side.
As for a beverage, svagdricka or kvass is the go-to, since it goes well with the salty and fat soup.
Not trying to force you, mind. It's just that I like kale, cabbage, brusselsprouts, and such and feel they are very unfairly maligned nowadays.
Rikard, when will your Scandinavian cookbook be out? Seriously. You're killing us. I'm a big brassica fan myself. They are delicious, highly nutritious and of long conservation, as the French say. We have a Cabbage In Residence at all times in the fridge. As for pork, we are in mourning for the closed factory. We love our piggy. I just pressure canned seven quart jars each of pork chunks in spicy broth and plain broth. Freezer is full of small jars of dripping. Money in the bank. I'm continuing my love affair with Sima (Finnish mead) with lots of fresh ginger added. Wonderful and thirst-quenching by itself, and a fantastic mixer for your liquor of choice. For a Mediterranean/Asian soul, I do love Nordic food.
As you mention our beloved neighbours, the finns, (which used to be called the "Eastern half of the Kingdom" in olden days) have you ever tried making the finnish desert called 'mämmi'?
It's something else. Stealing the content listing from the woke-ipedia:
"Mämmi is traditionally made of water, rye flour, powdered malted rye, seasoned salt and dried, powdered Seville orange zest. The mixture is then left to sweeten naturally, before being baked in an oven until set by the Maillard reaction. After baking, the mämmi is chilled for three to four days before serving."
The taste is sweet but the actual sugar content low, it gets sugar naturally from the reaction when it sits in the fridge.
As for swedish/scandinavian recipes - as brother peoples (clumsy translation that) there is much overlap and of course sibling rivalry as to who was first. This page gathers quite a few, including commentary from the guy who put it together:
It is regularly updatd, currently the top article is hilarous to me as he makes a very common foreigner's mistake re: Midsommar. It's legally on the 24th of June, has been for many years, but the real Midsommar is when the Sun sits highest in the sky, and only then. Where we live we can see it during midnight on Midsommar-afton (Midsummer's Eve).
The reason for locking it to the 24th is the hilarious bit: before, it often fell on a Wednesday or Thursday, meaning people wouldn't show up to work until Monday next week. This upset some parties (business interests) so much that they succesfully lobbied the governement way back when to lock it to a set date.
I say good luck with that, people now instead celebrate on both dates. In ancient times, before christianity, the Midsummer celebrations was for an entire week to make sure you got the date right.
This year, for the first time in ages, the wife and I will travel to visit relatives. Generally since we have no kids left at home (hasn't had for 10+ years come to think of it) we pack a pick-nick basket and go hiking in the fjells where there's no phone reception.
That sounds absolutely wonderful way to spend the day. I have some dear Finnish friends here (he is from Finland, she is Finnish-American), they taught me a lot about Finnish culture, and I have their recipe for mammi, though I have never tried making it. You have inspired me. I hear a lot about crawfish parties, I'd love those. Just curious, what do the Swedes make of Ari Aster's 2019 film "Midsommar" -? As a folklorist I confess I have a weakness for "folk horror" films like "The Wicker Man". I thought "Midsommar" was astonishing, I actually watched it twice to catch all the nuance and hidden stuff. I realize it's fiction, of course, but my God, the scholarship that went into it! And the acting and cinematography are both wonderful. I have a background in theatre so I'm very hard to please, critical to the nth degree. Each man kills the thing he loves. I thought it was a remarkable work, though clearly not something everyone could appreciate. A haunting story. BTW the 24th is Midsummer in the British Isles and in other formerly (?) pagan places, while the 21st or 22nd is the Solstice (Lithe, as it is called). Best to be safe and celebrate all week, as you say. The 24th is also St. John's Day, the birthday of the Baptist. The medicinal herb St. John's wort is blooming now, and I am making use of it, and on the 24th, I will follow tradition and gather green walnuts, for various things, though I would rather be eating crawfish and drinking beer and akvavit. Skol!
Those beetroots saved me from dissolving into a shrieking puddle of longing.
I myself love brussels sprouts (mouth watering as I type) and cabbage too. And apparently I'd eat kale at your house. It's just I wouldn't waste my money on it here with bok choi filling my needs perfectly.
Did you ever try Brussels sprouts with bacon and chestnuts? A holiday tradition in my house. I also love them cold with vinaigrette. There, made you drool.
Lol! I say it's kale and the hell with it! Actually I will eat kale but only in a good Portuguese or Galician caldo. Kale chips are a symptom of advancing fascism, IMAO.
My all-purpose vegetable is bok choi. Keeps well in the fridge for a month; the leaves are great on ham and cheese sandwiches; turns frozen dumplings into a guiltless meal; is great in my famous faux ramen dinner. Thrifty shopping is my specialty.
Love bok choi, I was raised on Asian vegetables. Faux ramen sounds divine. I'm honing my thrifty shopping and cooking these days, to say nothing of prepping (father was Mormon, mother was a squirrel, remember?). Just realized I have only 75 pounds of rice. That's not enough.
Now we buy what we need, but certainly think twice about what we want.
Extra effort is being made on my part to keep my 2008 Acura rdx healthy. two years ago I had a list of cars I wanted to test drive: BMW X series, Ford Edge ST TTv6, Even the stinking Lincoln Corsair hahaha but now, I am just not even interested.
yes indeed. Subaru's last forever. We had an Outback 20 years ago. Hubbs gave it to his older sister in the U.P. of Michigan. They named it Virginia. Nice car.
I disabled my 1975 Sube before it could hurt someone. The immortal car that ran on my will alone, as my mechanic put it. Just shy of 450,000 miles. Of course the original owner was a Swiss architect - it doesn't get more anal than that. He purportedly steam cleaned the engine once a month. I now have a 1998 Jaguar XJ, and she purrs like the good little kitten she is. Another deathless car. How did I deserve such good car karma?
I agree my 2019 Subaru Forster Touring model has way to much electronic surveillance crap on it! I have to turn half of it off each time I drive the car! If I had known I would have bought a base model with a keyed ignition!
Knobs and dials are all you need. The worst is the Auto Start/Stop Technology. It's more annoying than having a Richard Gere gerbil in your ass. And you can't disable them anymore. Communism IMO.
Oh yes about the Auto Start/Stop Technology! 😬 I had two Outbacks but I wanted a shorter vehicle. So I researched the Forester and settled on the Touring model for its features and interior/trim package. I knew NADA about all the crap that is on the premium trim models, and It’s ‘surveillance system’! I bought it used in Fall of 2020 with only 4,000 miles. It was the color and interior that I wanted. When I drove it home, it did the Auto Start/Stop thing at a stop sign & stop light. I thought to myself this car is f***ed up! Then I went home and looked it up online and figured out what was going on. But equally as annoying is the eyesight recognition that tells you to keep your eyes on the road! I have to disable both features every time I get into the car!!! Give me back a keyed ignition & a car without a brain! (Oh and I have looked at other used Subarus (with low mileage) that are more the base model and if you can find them they are almost as much as what I owe on my car!)
Stodgy is as stodgy does, my dear. My Jag looks so sedate, all it needs are diplomatic flags. But looks are deceiving - there's a tiger under the hood.
I used to sneer at all these avocado-toast-eating millennials and then a friend of mine from California mixed up some avocado to go on toast and wow. It's amazing!
But don't worry there's plenty of other things I can criticize those millennials about lol.
It is amazing. I had a house in Encinitas CA adjacent to an avocado grove. We ate them everyday. Unfortunately my dogs did too. I had to take one to the vet cuz he got so fat. The vet told me I was an animal abuser. Which was funny cuz the vet was 100 lbs overweight!
I kinda missed what's up with avocados and millenials. I like avocados a lot, as long as they don't have those disgusting woody strings growing within them that they sometimes do, whatever that is. I wouldn't put them (or anything) on toast.
With condiments of choice, as you prefer. There's the Sriracha crowd (sorry, kids, the chili crop failed and Huy Fong Foods has halted production. Better stock up). There's Tabasco, etc. I like a light sprinkle of Herbamare and black pepper. And a drizzle of EVOO, it goes without saying.
I'm mortgaging the house to keep the kitties happy. Now if you have dogs, and you hunt, you can take care of their feeding as is done in Alaska. A deer for you, and a deer for your dogs. You may want a freezer for this.
I will say this - sliced strawberries on avocado toast is really quite good. A little olive oil and salt on the toast, spread the avocado, then top with strawberry slices. #NotAMillennial #BoomerHere, 1961.
You have canned cat food in your supermarket? I haven't seen cheap canned cat food for two years. Expensive stuff sure, but the cheap stuff has been MIA.
This has been a recent situation for us here in Australia (other than toilet paper and hand sanitizer early on). Quite odd where a particular brand or particular product just disappears from the shelves for a while.
My cats lead the good life, LOL. So... pricey food for them. That being said, Walmart is just as empty as the rest in terms of cheap cat food. For two years now.
I'm sorry. I just knew they carried it. I'd see it when I looked for cat toys for my Shih Tzu. They have tiny mouths, but he wants to play, and dog toys don't fit in his mouth.
Mine only want the gravy type and all I see is Pate. Which is what they used to eat, exclusively. But oh no, now it's gotta be the gravy, with those little bits of "meat" that they lick off and leave. Spoiled little so-and-sos that they are.
No, I was surprised that the wild felines were eating avocados after I stopped putting out a bowl of dry food everyday. My late wife was trying to tame the cats so she could have them fixed. Cats and chickens attract Coyotes, so I wanted to eliminate a food source.
I have a raccoon that lives under the house and eats cat food on the porch. She washes each little piece of kibble in a bowl of water. Better than watching The Dodo. I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Stan. There are some good people - friends - here for you.
The last survivor kitten. Neighbor used power (Permethrin) to control chicken lice. That powder destroys feline family's liver. Ironic the cat's passion was hunting K-rats, mice and gophers and had a peace treaty with the neighbor's German Shepard. Animals past attention to the details of their environments. If I moved a pencil on my desk, the cat knew it!
Awww, that's wonderful. Put two or three extra digits on that guy and it could be my Tiger. He's here now on my desk, trying as usual to creep onto my keyboard. He wants ALL my attention. I lost a beloved old dog (granted, she was a tough and healthy 22) to a neighbor's use of Roundup. She wandered into his yard, as usual. He didn't tell us it was dripping with poison. Destroyed her kidneys in a day. The vets came and she lay in our laps on the beach where she'd lived her whole happy doggie life, she left her body and that was the end of Makapu'u, except in our hearts. They never really leave you.
Oh! I’m sorry to hear an your wife! Our cat Snuggles likes watermelon. We have 4 cockatiels too, and they like to eat veggies and fruit. I’m now sure how we wound up with 3 cats and 4 birds.
A friend sold his beloved avocado farm in Santa Barbara last year. The water regs and fees were going to put him out of business. He's skedaddled out of Cali and is happily retired in Florida.
The largest pork processor in the US just closed its California plant. Which just happens to be owned by Hong Kong. Why? Costing too much to keep running. Kiss your bacon goodbye!
I think that more to do with the new "humane" pork processing rules, and taxes, and permitting, then anything else. Doing business here is hard, everyone has a hand out
Yeah, they sure do. The need for serious reform in factory farming of all animals is very real, it's a horrible situation and I for one do not mind paying more, if I know that the suffering is being addressed. I just wonder how much of the price hike is being allocated to the animals themselves and their needs.
'reform' meaning forcing other people to do what you want with their own property?
Sorry, that's a crime. If you want to eat hotel-raised pork, that's your choice to pay for it. Don't take food out of the mouths of other people who can barely afford it.
First of all, I'm not referring to small farms. I live in a very rural farming and ranching community and I'm very aware of how hard it is for these folks to make a living. I'm talking about massive factories with hundreds if not thousands of animals. Doing what you want with your own property is a God-given right, but does that mean that committing atrocities on your own property is sanctioned? So, what is the definition of an atrocity, that's the question. We have laws in place about the treatment of human workers - in the past they were subject to all manner of abuse. Was that the right of the property owner where they worked? Mistreatment of animals goes on - I'm sure you and most people are aware of the treatment that factory-farmed animals receive. It's a nightmare. Hens have their beaks routinely burned off so they cannot neurotically peck each other to death in their misery. Pigs' tails are cut off so their fellows cannot chew them off in their misery. Pigs are smarter than dogs, but you wouldn't treat a dog the way that pigs are treated in large factory farms. The egg industry has changed course after recent legislation - hens have more space now (they were being kept two to a space the size of a sheet of folder paper). They are sometimes subject to bright lights 24/7 in order to force them to lay more eggs. They are never, in their lives, released from their cages, to run, to scratch, to be under the sun and know what it is to be a hen. They are egg-laying machines, unless they are "free range". I could go on and on, about baby calves being kept from movement - forced to be constantly immobile - so that they never gain muscle and their flesh remains white and soft for "prime" veal. Gandhi said, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." We are slowly making progress, but we have a long way to go, in my opinion. But as I mentioned, I wonder how the new laws will actually improve the animals' lives and how much it is just about the money.
That's what I get for following Breitbart News, I guess. Or was it Press California? The story was pretty alarming but yes, conservative news can be exaggerated too, of course. It always pays to look deeper...well, you have relieved my mind, thank you. I live in Commiefornia, and bacon's already gone through the stratosphere. I now anticipate the blows. It's come to that.
I thought baby formula shortages were rock bottom. Nope. Now there are tampon shortages. It's over!
Must be all those "new" transgender types getting into the tampon game...................
They're good for bloody noses too. Unfortunately I learned that in my wrestling days
Did you get toxic shock syndrome?
More like "toxic schmuck syndrome". To have that done to me, against my will, in front of the pom-pom girls, has scarred me for life. And it's memorialized on VHS!
I still have a DVD/VHS player....have not used it in 15 years
pull that baby out and be prepared to be embarrassed
Your challenge is to outlive the playback technology ;-)

All true. You make me laugh dude.
Breaking News: Source of TSS in American Male Wrestlers Identified!!!
They're not pu$$ies, they just shove tampons up their nose.

too much? LOL
cruel
seriously, what would you consider "rock bottom"? It's gettin' grim when there's a lack of tampons! Sayin'
And sucking chest wounds.
You are definitely having a bad day if you get stabbed AND you have a tampon sticking out of your thorax.
Hilarious comment btw!...:)
Where do they insert them? is what I'd like to know... actually, scratch that. I don't want to know.
I suppose they could use the ones in the boy's bathrooms, but that would hardly be fair, now would it? Gotta leave some for the, um...guys...I guess...
It's fair and they have flair! The ones in the boy's bathrooms are used for another orifice, just a skosh across the taint, with a foxy tail on the exposed end.
TMI, Ryan. jk lol I need emojis here.
I told you I was drinking wine. You're more clever...and more concise. And that is precisely why I read all your post.
Backatchu!
Two words for you: Diva cup.
Yes, they do the job just fine. I've also gone completely gypsy and used sphagnum moss and usnea back in my wild woman in the woods days. AGGGHHH! Don't say that name!! Gwyneth Paltrow, that maniacal harpy!! "we will all stretch and grow"
Certainly, those who insert some of Gwyneth's products will!
Try checking at the southern border? 🤔
If that doesn't make the blood boil, nothing will.
Figuratively speaking?...or is that also part of the diva cup practice?! haha. Sorry, bad pun, but it was right there! :P
Touche! funny. Yeah, we're talkin' Mama Bear's blood now. I'm not a Mama or Papa with an infant, but I know how I feel when the shelves are bare of my kitties' food, as they often seem to be these days. So I can only imagine...
Hahaha
Noted. And new to me. And added to my personal lexicon. Thank you and lol!
As someone pointed out, "red wave, incoming."
like Moses parting the red sea?...delete upon receipt.
To be polite, vaxxed women are having lots and LOTS of unpleasant problems with their reproductive system. I've even heard that some in menopause now need tampons.
I have too. It is a legitimate concern. I am sorry if I have offended.
No worries Ryan.
I am unvaccinated. I had Covid in Jan of 2021 and 2022. My period has been messed up since. Heavier and longer. I used to have the easiest period. It sucks. Also, no one really talks about it either. It’s always about the vaccinated (which I get).
I know, the reports coming in are very, very bad. Bleeding "down there" after menopause can mean many different things. Always alarming. My womb and I have always been on friendly terms. I'm taking care of her. No vax for me!!
Good idea. A friend of mine's mother just got a hysterectomy when post booster, she began bleeding. They found a fast growing tumor in the endometrium.
😔
I suspect the Millennials have been noticing the sharp uptick in Uber Eats, GrubHub & all restaurant and drink prices in our San Francisco area since the lockdowns. At least, even if saving to buy a home here was impossible, they could enjoy their time drinking fine cocktails, traveling & eating good food. I'm not sure what they'll all do now.
They'll probably just join the local antifa to complain louder...............
or ransack a few grocery stores
No cop, no stop. No bail, no fail
hahahaha. You mean you didn't take the "knee"?!
If their stock options are underwater they'll just be scraping by. RSUs and options are the magic sauce around here.
All on margin driving their BMW 3 series...

Oh my dear. A Marmite lover. Let me press you to my bosom in the joy of recognition--figuratively, of course. My tribe!
Ma soeur!!
Small ones were $0.68/each at my local grocery store last year!
Wow, where are you?
Houston, TX. They're about double that now, but at least I can afford them...for now.
Try to force me to eat kale, see what happens.
This page gathers quite a few, including commentary from the guy who put it together:
https://www.swedishfood.com/
Did you ever!
Sounds pretty good to me.
well you'd have the "O" face with both avocado toast or kale. Puke and Pleasure are often indistinguishable:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzIN3EgBIHg
No, Ryan. I would not be making that face.
SCA - I am sorry. I should log-out after I've had my 3rd glass of wine.
It's not your fault you didn't realize the only correct answer would be "frosty incredulity."
Indeed they are.
Avocados are run by the mexican cartels. Made me think a bit about indulging myself.
Not all of them. Some are run by California cartels. Nyuck nyuck nyuck.
Serve it on doilies that gets em' all hot and bothered
I think they pretend to like it rough.
Oooh. There you go again. Lmao
IT IS JUST EVERYTHING!!!
We still have a 2002 Subaru Forester w/365K+ miles on it........... it burns some oil, but cheaper than an additional car payment
that's the only way to beat inflation
Fewer electronic tracking devices in older cars. Big bonus!
My, what interesting experiences you seem to have had, Ryan!
I'm just an old idiot, but young at heart!
Ah, that makes two of us, my friend!
(Oh and I have looked at other used Subarus (with low mileage) that are more the base model and if you can find them they are almost as much as what I owe on my car!)
yes, good lesson, and great advice.
Tell them you want a "de-contented" model. They'll look at you like you're a troglodyte.
exactly. I am not really on fire anymore. My old rdx looks kind of stodgy in the parking lot, but I am okay with it.
Stodgy is as stodgy does, my dear. My Jag looks so sedate, all it needs are diplomatic flags. But looks are deceiving - there's a tiger under the hood.
Yeah, My rdx has a nice turbo and is not pokey. I do floor it when I can.
We have a Saab 9-3 that loves to speed.
Then we have mom's old Merc, that is.... not perky, but it is smooth.
I am not in the mood for a new car at this point.
You gotta disable that crap right away.
Just please remember that millennials are late twenties-early forties, and all the truly awful stuff is Gen Z...
I kinda missed what's up with avocados and millenials. I like avocados a lot, as long as they don't have those disgusting woody strings growing within them that they sometimes do, whatever that is. I wouldn't put them (or anything) on toast.
The strings are from younger trees.
Thank-you for the info. I had wondered.
Same. Then I became an avocodo buyer for a distributor and got the info from a grower.
It's pretty good. Nothing I can't live without, but it's pretty good.
Wow where have you been? You missed the whole ‘avocado toast’ trend and craze? 😉😜
I missed it. is this just sliced avocado on toast?
Mashed.
I had it with only bacon pieces. I liked it, it didn't need hot sauce of any sort.
With bacon is wonderful.
How will they blame this on Putin?
It's all Putin's fault!
He's so powerful that he should have stopped this from happening.
He's selfish!
Brandon is Making Russia Great Again!!!
Ummm, y’know, I get that schadenfreude thing toward the utterly duped and those deliberately opting to be misinformed.
But when cat food costs what filet mignon used to cost…?
That day is nigh upon us.
I'm mortgaging the house to keep the kitties happy. Now if you have dogs, and you hunt, you can take care of their feeding as is done in Alaska. A deer for you, and a deer for your dogs. You may want a freezer for this.
I know people that would give their cat filet mignon. I wonder what they would feed her now?
I will say this - sliced strawberries on avocado toast is really quite good. A little olive oil and salt on the toast, spread the avocado, then top with strawberry slices. #NotAMillennial #BoomerHere, 1961.
That sounds most intriguing, I'll have to try it. Thanks, Andrew!
Next challenge - peanut butter on hot dogs. But only grilled hot dogs, and only a light sheen of PB. You want to be able to taste both!
Terrible
So basically avocados would be a good currency
Not stable but a hell of a trade item in certain circles.
It is actually much worse than that. Not every flavour of cat food was in the supermarket last week.
Have you checked out Walmart? I don't have a cat, but I know they do carry it.
There is no other way.

I can’t find bill cat food at Costco and my cats don’t like avocado toast
Wild felines eat avocados that fall off of my trees! I had to get a dog to stop that.
For realsies, or are you just pulling my leg? I wish I had a canned cat food tree.
Thank you Keahi...https://youtu.be/0r_bTDi_v90
The squirrels go after the dry kitty food. We caught a few racoons in a live trap and brought them up the canyon and let them go.
Oh! I’m sorry to hear an your wife! Our cat Snuggles likes watermelon. We have 4 cockatiels too, and they like to eat veggies and fruit. I’m now sure how we wound up with 3 cats and 4 birds.
I should have invested in avocados.

Okay, that's not funny. Stop!, we were having fun with tampons.
I mean - so much between your scary summary and reality.
This is one of 45 plants they operate.
They squarely lay the blame on Commiefornia for high costs
They expect another operator to take over
Doesn't happen until next year.
However, the way you laid it out is no different than how our friends on the left report every minor thing.
We're better. Come on!
All news on both sides is exaggerated. It won’t be news if it wasn’t. It would be on a substack..
True that.
