My father was a newspaper editor. I have been a journalist of some sort (mostly in trade publications and religious publications) all my professional life. I am shocked at what journalism has become. My father drummed into me that newspapers were to question everyone and everything, and report ANYONE who cheats, betrays a public trust, lies, commits fraud, etc. If you were a reporter and your best friend told you he had embezzled or murdered or was wanted by the police, your story had better be filed within the hour. The newspaper looked out for the "common man" -- it wasn't supposed to side with the powerful. Today, "journalists" ARE the powerful.
