"to stop outbreaks, you generally need an exterminator, not an epidemiologist." 🐱 Meow!

Ryan Gardner's avatar

Its a disease of filth in close spaces. Don't breath dry rat poop "freckles" and you'll be fine.

Heck, New York is 5 floating islands held together by rats linking paws like "Hands Across America" and there hasn't been an outbreak there...like never.

People are so stupid.

Art's avatar

Who takes these cruise ships? They’re like an enclosed room where everyone exits with explosive diarrhea or engages in cage fighting matches uploaded to TikTok. Not to mention the cruise ship ports are an environmental disaster throughout the Caribbean and elsewhere.

Beth's avatar

Was gifted one. Within 3 days I was trying to bribe the staff to let me off. I HATED IT! Sure. I'll spend $6,000 to go be locked in a floating gambler/glutton insane asylum for 8 days! SHURE! 🙄😝

I'm sure it was lovely in the old days when only civilized and well off people went. But now? ... Yah, I'll pass. I don't gamble, don't drink. Don't eat all that much. And I can't bring my firearms on board. So .. yeah ...no.

Occam's avatar

Your opinion is shockingly hostile given the opportunity to be locked in a filth locker for a week and witness midnight buffet fights and experience competing boomboxes on the pool deck, while competing with the rest of humanity for the last chicken wings.

Warmek's avatar

🤣🤣🤣

I have to admit, I was pretty tempted by the first "50,000 Tons of Metal" cruise. And if one doesn't *know* about the environment ahead of time, the *idea* seems sound. Relax on a big boat, go see pretty things in pretty places, eat good food, and so forth.

It's just... it's *really* one of those things where the experience does *not* live up to the advertising.

Bootsorourke's avatar

Never sounded good to me--trapped on a boat with all these fat drunk people. Now they're all boostered up and crazy and probably sick. Floating diarrhea prisons with bad music.

Maybe all those people who get "lost at sea" on these things maybe are just trying to escape.

Thanks to Biden we will have screw-worm flies, all over the USA soon.

They've broken out of where they were cordoned off south of panama .

They lay eggs in wounds, the larvae feed on the host till mature.

They got past the cordon by laying eggs in millions of migrants walking through panama during the Bidenreich.

Thanks to Biden, the migrants were flown all over the USA.

First year, many will not find mates, those that do will lay 3000 eggs - which will have lots of mates handy.

Constitution Rules's avatar

Thanks. When I went on the cruise I was gifted, I realized I had my 45 on me. oops. before I could go check into the cruise, I had to get creative. So I bought a box of Tampax, emptied most of it, and stuck the 45 in the box, covering the top of it with the dreaded "feminine products" most men won't touch. Just casually stuck in on the floor behind the drivers seat. Sure enough, came back and it was still safely stowed! Some things are too simple. LOL

Ingenious! Well done

That's why we went to Alaska, and I mostly stayed in the room. I still enjoyed myself.

Some of these cruise ships are like floating Petri dishes. I know rats traveled the world hundreds of years ago by hopping aboard wooden ships, but this is ridiculous.

Jan's avatar

Was on a Greek Mediterranean cruise once in the early 90s. It was a bit rough. All the corners and hallways had Chinese food cartons on the floor ready to do your thing in. The ship eventually experienced a spectacular sinking some time after I was on it.

Bootsorourke's avatar

Chinese food cartons on the floor to do what?

Jan's avatar

Rough seas cause nausea and sea sickness. The cartons were available to handle sea sickness vomiting as people moved around. 🤷‍♀️🤢

jabster's avatar

The key is to either book a true luxury cruise line, or if you're on a mainstream line, pay extra for the rooms, dining, and other amenities where hoi polloi don't (can't) go. Stay away from the ones that advertise the most on TV.

You don't want the mega-ships offering dirt-cheap cabins, and you don't want to eat at the buffet.

At the other extreme, some of these smaller "expeditionary" ships attract a certain moneyed, crunchy type for whom hygiene is optional.

Bootsorourke's avatar

Ryan Gardner's avatar

I bet its a huge number. You have to remember the subway alone is 665 miles long and on average 200 ft deep. Plus all the sewer and drainage pipes.

Many of the subway routes before the 60's have been abandoned. There's more abandoned than active. So plenty of places for rats...gross

Invasion of alien dwarves!

Brian DeLeon's avatar

Hotez is a fucking bow tie wearing idiot. He raises my temperature to boiling.

Ryan Gardner's avatar

Agree.

Hotez conceded on Joe Rogan “I’m not as cautious about my diet as I should be - I’m a junk foodoholic.”

Ok, Hotez, I don't plan on taking any advice from your dumpy ass.

clem h fandango's avatar

Worse, I recall him telling Joe that he bonds with his autistic daughter over fast food burgers and fries. Not doing that poor girl any favors...

Ryan Gardner's avatar

Like I said before, Hotez has to be the leading cause of vaginal dryness

Juju's avatar

This is just so sad and sick. All three of my kids are autistic, and when they were adults and we only had the two boys still at home we removed processed food/fast food from our household/diets. Their emotional and mental health improved so dramatically! I’ll never encourage crap food again. They were able to stop the horrible medications that they gave to them all those years. So much happier now. It saddens me how much our food damages them neurologically, so Hotez is a disgusting specimen of a doctor if he doesn’t know that. His poor daughter.

May I suggest those are equally bad scenarios?

Ryan Gardner's avatar

Well it was my wife who kinda started the whole concept last night when we were joking about it with friends. I just added a little color

SCA's avatar

May I suggest your wife was exaggerating?

Though uncomplicated childbirth is not the torture porn Hollywood's been addicted to forever, there's a reason they call it "labor."

Ryan Gardner's avatar

BTW. She was 5'4" and 110 lbs before she got pregnant with our twins and she pushed them out without an epidural or c section

baker charlie's avatar

Good for her!

Did the same about 30 years back.

Twins are something else, eh?

SCA's avatar

Please tell her she has my utmost respect but I shake my head too. I still bless that terrifying big fat epidural needle for its magic. I spent the rest of my labor as jolly as anyone could be with all the other laboring women screaming up and down the hallway. The nurses kept asking me why I hadn't been screaming before that, myself, but when my doctor said cheerfully it was gonna be another six hours or so I told him it was time for the anesthetist to pay me a visit. Just as I'm grateful for indoor plumbing, I approve of sensible and appropriate pain relief too.

Ryan Gardner's avatar

I was all for both. But she was dead set on just doing it el naturale.

I think i was in more pain just watching the whole affair. I've never passed out in my life but I almost buckled that day.

Bootsorourke's avatar

did she threaten your life during labor?

Ryan Gardner's avatar

That sums it up.

But the minute they both were in her arms I was the best husband in the world...

Ryan Gardner's avatar

Of course. She was buzzed off a half bottle of wine

SCA's avatar

Ryan Gardner's avatar

Well. I took a 2 hr nap this afternoon, if that's any indication...lol

Bootsorourke's avatar

as a woman who had over 24 hours of "back labor" with only the last two hours with a spinal block,

I can attest that it really hurts. a lot.

SCA's avatar
May 14Edited

Fifty or so years ago I asked my close friend if labor was as horrible as the movies and novels portrayed and she said it was like really bad gas pains, and I could later confirm she nailed it pretty well--especially since I've had experience of really bad gas pains from time to time for most of my life. I think we all know they can bend you over in agony. Same principle--internal muscles contracting quite unpleasantly.

Understanding that an epidural is merely novocaine and has negligible systemic effects beyond that spinal block region made me quite enthusiastic for it at the right time.

Bootsorourke's avatar

I was apparently clenching essential muscles in reaction to the back labor. It was def worse than gas.

The epidural, when it finally happened, released my muscles and the baby and allowed the doctor to cut to fit a big baby.

SCA's avatar

What actually happened was that the idiot Dutch couple who were the first fatalities had gone birdwatching in a landfill before the ship left Argentina.

And WHO would let such stupidity go to waste?

Rosemary B's avatar

"The Andes version". 😆

US has "deer mice" and many ppl die from that... maybe....

Who goes bird watching in a trash dump? Dutch people for sure

SCA's avatar

Well, the update indicates it might've been touring in Patagonia which was experiencing an outbreak at the time.

People do not understand that nature is not our friend, and I suspect few enthusiasts of the outdoors take simple prophylactic measures very seriously. If you're going to wander around in pathogen paradise, perhaps taking Vitamin C at preventative levels would be a good idea. And certainly if you start to feel peaky...

But they don't ensure that their little first-aid kits--if they carry them--are sensibly stocked.

Carole's avatar

Ever read any of Richard Preston's books? Seems to me if people would refrain from messing around in bat caves, not eat bush meat (yuck), and don't mess around with monkeys, we'd all be a lot better off!

SCA's avatar

Sure did. "The Hot Zone" was mighty grim.

And yes. The Horseshoe Theory is true. Scientists and certain African food habits meeting in a toxic embrace.

Carole's avatar

There are deer mice in my area. I had an invasion of them a couple years ago, trapping one or two every night. Couldn't figure out how the little twerps were getting into my house, and I finally had to call an exterminator. I hear reports about one or two people getting sick every year in this 4-county area, but I never did! The pest control company treated it very casually... The guys who came out said the disease around here is "mild". (Seems to me they'd know more about it than the people who push fearporn in the news.)

Yuma's Freezing's avatar

I am surprised people from New Mexico aren't the poster children for this activity. (I live here so it's okay for me to amuse myself at their expense.)

I ain't no expert but I don't think people build up tolerances to hantaviruses. They kill you too quickly. Here in the US in the "four corners" area of the Southwest there are a handful of deaths every year, mostly in places like Navaho communities, although Gene Hackman's wife died of hantavirus in their lovely home whose outbuildings were later found to be infested with rodent droppings etc. In dry climates dust forms quickly from them nasty little pellets.

Brian DeLeon's avatar

I loved Gene Hackman. Such a marvelous filmography, and such an ignominious demise.

Birding at a landfill sounds like a great way to win a Darwin Award.

SCA's avatar

See update.

But Darwin Award still in play. When you go exploring, expect to find the unexpected and that it won't be pleasant.

And, kids--summer's approaching. I hear tick season is ferocious this year. My own handy hint: Grease up well before hiking. Make yourself harder to bite. Carry a squeeze bottle of dishwashing soap or similar. You find one o' them little fuckers already burrowing in--suffocate it. Soap works on all bugs. Clogs up their respiratory organs. Cleans the bitten area while it's killing the biter.

jabster's avatar

Soap and detergents are a fantastic insecticide. Only problem is limited residual action.

I try a tablespoon of peppermint Dr. Bronner's in a quart spray bottle before moving on to the harder stuff if needed. Deadly to bugs, easy on plants.

SCA's avatar

Dr. Bronner's soap is a great product. Excellent too (since it's a castile soap) if any in the household--God forbid--get lice. (No need for anything special. If it's a really bad infestation use a straight vinegar rinse too [with caution around eyes etc.])

Dr. Bronner's has a Siberian Fir & Spruce scented SalSuds Cleaner might be good for the really stubborn infestations. Haven't tried it for gardening myself yet for that.

Bootsorourke's avatar

for those who have contact with the tick nymphs which don't carry Lyme but will burrow under your skin--peroxide finds them.

Bootsorourke's avatar

I'll try that. I have had Lyme for decades and don't want any more bites.

SCA's avatar

Sorry to hear that you've been afflicted with that awful thing.

Dr Linda's avatar

Wow, thanks. What a mess

SCA's avatar

See update.

It was wandering blissfully around amongst nature's teeming treasure store that might've been the cause.

Bootsorourke's avatar

I am still cringing at the idea of tourism at a landfill.

SCA's avatar

Well, see that update. And as I further read, the cruise was specifically a naturalists' adventure; those retirees were naturalisming as hard as they could. (No! Not that kind of naturalisming!)

This is like all the dolts who think climbing Everest is a fabulous way to spend one's extra money too. Nature more often has a terrible rather than a tender beauty.

Bootsorourke's avatar

Love it. The third example was a surprise hahaha

Bootsorourke's avatar

Quite a pithy comment.—terrible instead of tender. And I love the naturalizing as hard as they can.

I hike until the mosquitos come. That’s as hard as I naturalize. I spent most of my childhood in the woods and learned my lesson

SCA's avatar

I'm the one waving cheerfully from shore, making sure the ducks don't steal the sandwiches while the rest of 'em are kayaking. I'm the one admiring the beautiful snow from the big windows in the lodge and drinking my hot hot cocoa while the rest of 'em are using whatever expensive equipment they like to slide down the slopes.

I'm also the one transplanting that pretty plant in my garden and realizing too late what it was, but I had plenty of vinegar to wash my hands and forearms with so I averted imminent disaster.

Etc.

... the importance of having a mouser (cat) cannot be overstated. They provide a much higher ROI than shares in Moderna.

Juju's avatar

One of mine regularly brings a mouse up from our finished basement, (not sure how they get in…) and it’s always alive! She drops it at my feet as if expecting pay. Then she chases the poor little thing around until it’s exhausted or injured. I’ve got a system where I trap it under a shallow clear plastic tub and I use a thin chalkboard that is a bit wider to slide underneath it, then my son releases it outside, injured sometimes. We live in the suburbs so we aren’t rural. I often wonder if it’s healthy or OK to just let my cat eat it??? Can she get rabies from it? We have enough hairballs that get coughed up (the joys of a long haired cat,) so I’m not sure I want to see the mouse parts be coughed up.

But if it were healthy for her diet I’d let her finish them off …

Felix's avatar

I've never heard of mice vectoring rabies. As for food value and safety... that mouse is likely just as good for her as a burger from McDonalds is for you. ;-)

But seriously, my favorite thing about this is the quote from the "expert" about concern over the increase incidence of zoonotic transmission...hmmm, gain of function research from the very same experts often alters animal viruses to increase human susceptibility to their transmission. You can't make this stuff up.

Ollie's avatar

Carole's avatar

Well, damn... I was seeing Chagas bugs around here a few years ago. (Gotta love living in the desert...) But, I don't think the ones in my area are carrying the parasite. At least, not yet. It is known to have spread through areas of California, though, and will eventually get to Nevada if it isn't already here.

Mitch's avatar

Better get the newest vaccine from Pfizer or Moderna every six months just to be safe. Small risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, death, cancer, autoimmune disease with each shot, but so worth it!

Carole's avatar

Right-o, I'll be rushing right out to get it. Maybe they can combine it with Moderna's new mRNA flu jab, to make it even better!

Oh GAWD!!! Peter Hotez again?!?! I don't even think that he got new bow ties from his proceeds from the last pandemic.

Well, yeah... But he's CNN's favorite "expert" isn't he? I agree, it would have been nice not to have been subjected to his face again.

I'm starting to think Hotez himself is a result of a zoonotic spillover event.

So what you're suggesting is don't eat a pangolin that had sex with a bat that bit a mouse with hantavirus. Got it!

And stay away from monkeys!

By which you mean "don't have any sexual relations with them" which one would have assumed no one need be told, and yet that micro-"outbreak" of Monkey Pox said otherwise.

They’ve got to get our attention and our sleeves rolled up again, somehow or another. These tanked Big pHARM-us stock prices aren’t going to raise all by themselves.

And what would we do without Peter Hotez, a guy who never met a vaccine he didn’t like, who has an autistic daughter, very likely from the fact that he never met a shot he didn’t like, being at the forefront, doing all he can to get us shook.

Welcome to the Hotez California. You can check out any time you like, but he’ll never let you leave. He craves the spotlight almost as

much a AF. (Not “as f*ck”, Anthony Fauci. Same thing, though…)

Autistic daughter. Hmmm 🤔

Excellent post!

"because it dignifies this nonsense."

Brilliant!
