I lost a job early in the pandemic as a marketer because I, as a copywriter and editor, replaced every instance in marketing copy of "due to COVID" or "due to the COVID-19 pandemic" with "due to lockdowns" or "due to government enforced business/school closures" and refused to stop doing so.

I then lost a ton of money on my freelance sidelines as nobody had the resources or reason to invest in B2B services for businesses that weren't allowed to be open and might never (and often didn't) come back.

Those were tiny things. There was so much in the intervening 18+ months: death threats, suicidal ideation, loss of friends, loss of relationships, community crumbling, local crime exploding, being peeled off the kitchen floor by my husband one night because literally moving my legs seemed a pointless exercise in existence that had been stolen from me, cutting police padlocks off of playgrounds in the middle of the night, so much drinking, so much smoking and quitting and smoking,

to say nothing of the things that happened to people that suffered ten times worse than me or to their younger children, and me seeing it and being powerless to stop them.

I am the angriest, most cynical, most hateful, most violent-hearted, most mistrustful, most anarchic I have ever been in my life at this point- the peak? the downward curve?- of this global disaster borne of a respiratory virus with a 99%+ survival rate.

COVID didn't do it. They did.

Make them pay.

MAKE THEM HURT.

I told my teenagers "Never forget who did this to you. When you are 30 years old, and interviewing a 50-year old, ask them about the pandemic. If they were all about lockdowns and masks, don't hire them."

Yes but we have to construct the questions in a way that exposes them without their knowledge or at least not until its too late. Believe me I'm working on this!

I actually learned this in interrogation*cough*interviewing classes.

Ask the person "what should we do to <person>."

"What should we do to people who refuse to engage in NPIs during a global pandemic even if evidence for their effectiveness is questionable?"

The people you're looking for will say what they've been saying to us: withhold medical care, take their jobs, take their rights, take their dignity, lock them up, kill them.

I prefer not to argue with people- ever- but when I get into a pointless "fight" with an idiot on the internet, a favorite way of mine to shut it down is to simply ask, "Ok. What do you think should be done to me?"

Every now and then, people take the bait and show the audience the monster they really are.

Perfect! I want to make sure these folks don't get to claim that they were "on the right side of history" all along, not even in casual conversation.

One of the first rules of good interviewing (or whatever you want to call it) is worth everyone, regardless of profession or background, learning:

Given the opportunity, unless they are a psychopath, people WANT to tell you who they really are and WANT to confess their sins.

If they ARE a psychopath, they want attention and arousal, which amounts to the same thing packaged differently.

Make people feel genuinely safe, that they have no risks or stakes in talking to you, and people will tell you they think (for example) that <X group> should be raped, murdered, and thrown in a burn pit if they believe you won't judge them for saying so.

*excitedly taking notes*

I've been thinking about this since April 2020 when it became overwhelmingly, incontrovertibly obvious that the world was in a full-blown hysteria and that some day it will be embarrassing for anyone to claim they supported lockdowns and all the other NPIs. Concerned primarily of course with our fellow citizen more than pols who we have recorded evidence of their sociopathy.

When the inflation, systemic economic disruptions and pain reach a certain point, they will be removed, one way or another.

The big question is if they can consolidate their power to the point that they *cannot* be removed peacefully before they destroy the economy.

LOVED the playground padlock-cutting story! What I find astonishing is, as more and more evidence of extreme murderous malfeasance keeps getting added to the pile already collected and sitting in plain sight, how are these people still walking around healthy? I guess they are still protected by the fog of war helpfully generated by the dissembling old school media machine. I am waiting for the ADE and other terrible conditions to really start biting to the point that the public catches on that they have been duped and made war on by an enemy that has been killing them softly while pretending to help them “stay safe.” Until then I like to watch the video about the end of the Romanian? tyrant Cecseuque? One day he was in a stadium giving a speech. The crowd was roaring. He thinks they are cheering for him at first, then a horrified look comes across his face as he realizes that they are actually screaming “Let’s go Brandon!” A few days later he is in front of a firing squad. An army officer had been assigned to guard him before his execution. His orders were to make sure he shot him if anyone tried to rescue him before the execution. The officer describes being part of the firing squad, and says, “my first shots hit him in the legs…”

I went looking on DuckDuckGo to see if I could find it but was not able to find it. I did find a lot of very good material, including a great two-part series called “Doctor Horribilis” which focused on Elena Ceaucescu, NC’s wife. She had a grade school education but wanted to style herself as a scientist so it was arranged to get her a doctorate in Chemistry. Other people’s research was published in her name etc. She was declared to be the head of the Romanian Scientific Reseach Institute and wanted to be addressed as “Scientist-Doctor-Professor” or something like that LOL! None of the actual scientists dared to say anything because “heads would have rolled.” Part one is over an hour in length. It is a fascinating documentary of how power works when it is not tethered to a respect for the truth. I did not have time to watch it all but it is packed with interviews with people describing their experiences. That clip with the guard might be on there somewhere. I’d link it but don’t know how yet.

Here's a bright spot in my story: I was FAR from the only one doing padlock-cutting in my (former) home city. There was one community where a group of parents did it basically every single day, dragging the local precinct into an endless arms race of more and bigger chains, which all invariably got cut- always in the dead of night, always with no witnesses, and the cops couldn't stake out a playground, because they barely had the resources to deal with REAL crime.

winter 2021 is gonna be much worse than winter 2020. On top of restrictions, masks, possibly some localized lockdowns, we will have vaccine mandates dystopia, vaccine passports and supply chain disruptions. I'm only waiting for interest rates to go up and economic recovery to stagnate and the cycle is complete. I hope that's gonna be enough to wake up more people and maybe we can expect a more hopeful spring 2022 ?

Expand full comment

I'm not so sure about more lockdowns, particularly. Where I live (Quebec, and you too perhaps?) we have the injection passports and there's hardly any visible resistance, but mandatory injections for health care workers have been pushed back a month because of a very real possibility of systematic collapse as more than just the non-injected workers are threatening to walk. The lawless junta running this province has perhaps gone too far even for this docile population.

People are coming back into the office. People are acting more normal. No one even wants to TALK about lockdowns (much less the obscene curfew). People are again making future plans as if they have an actual right to do so. I personally hope that QC may phase out the injection passport in a few months considering it clearly accomplishes nothing other than reducing customers at struggling businesses; it's pandemic theatre to make pro-injection fanatics feel righteous, but it's not carrying it's own weight. These internal passports have been a love affair of just a few months for every dumbass country that's had one so far.

And the supply chain disruptions, how does that do anything but incriminate those in power who brought us lockdown? I think we underestimate how quickly, and hypocritically, our lockdown loving fellow citizens will turn on those that did what the public supposedly wanted, according to various polls that never seemed particularly believable. I think, maybe, the tide is turning already.

Expand full comment

Yes I am in Quebec. You might be right. I have the feeling that most people know it's bullshit by now but still follow the rules (at least masks and vaxx pass). Most people seem lifeless however. We've been beaten up by the government for so long ... The tides are turning but slowly. Nobody want another curfew for sure but I'm afraid the vaxx pass will stay for while, until at least spring 2022.

(my comment about lockdowns was directed to other places in the world, they might have more...)

Expand full comment

I agree, lockdowns are more of a risk in places that have not already played out that tactic. No one who’s had our level of confinement wants to relive it.

For the passport you’re probably right. My optimism comes from the fact that it’s the one policy I’ve been able to opt out of, and I’m not the only injected person who is not playing their statist game. I’m inviting more people over instead of eating out. And I frequent a place I know that doesn’t check the passport. While pro-injection fanatics chuckle on their couches about how it’s the antivax that have to stay home this time, people without the passport are out having fun in all sorts of ways. We’ll survive the winter without access to theaters, although the theaters might not survive without us.

How long can we keep in place a punitive and divisive policy whose supposed efficacy is, in the best case, weakened daily by diminishing returns? Quebec will show us.

The entire time of the pandemic, when folks say things like "the pandemic has really messed up my business," or "the pandemic has really ruined my social lie," - I correct them. Most sort of do a double take and agree. A few have become silent or just had no noteworthy response.

I think we're all going to need to stay tight together during this madness. I see so many of us even desperate to know we're not crazy, that we're not alone. The constant propaganda/gas-lighting is having an ongoing toll on us all.

But this, too, entailed military weakness, and since the privations it inflicted were obviously unnecessary, it made opposition inevitable. "Our report found a mortality rate of zero among children without a pre-existing medical condition such as leukemia. If that trend holds, it has significant implications for healthy kids and whether they need two vaccine doses. "

Of course, we all know looking at basic covid data that healthy kids do not die from covid and barely have symptoms. Unfortunately I cannot share WSJ article with whoever I know because of "Wall Street" in the name. They should read those articles instead of the typical MSN trash though.
