Perhaps. But when the richest man in the world, who btw may have singlehandedly saved us from totalitarianism, says he needs x,y,z types of talent...well then I'm going to have take his word for it.

OK, now I get it.

And, no, you do not have to take his word for it. What you need to do is to investigate and see if he what he is saying is actually justified. He's not God. He's not even Moses and there was plenty to doubt about him even after he saved his people.

He loves America. I'm sure he'd rather hire within our borders.

I don't think he's God. I just think he's a helluva business person. The number one attribute of a successful biz owner is the ability to evaluate talent...because human capital is your biggest risk...but can also be the biggest asset. They are an investment. If you don't make the right calls with human capital then you can forget about monetary gain from capital investment.

He wouldn't be where he's at if he wasn't an exemplar of that skill set. Period.

Because of all that, he can't be acting in self-interest?

And how do you know "he loves America"? What does that mean anyhow?

I have no doubt he's done well hiring H1-Bs. Twitter/X has a ton of them on staff. Maybe they were there already when he showed up.

The only reason to hire H1-Bs instead of Americans is to pay less money for staff.

I want Americans to have jobs. If Elon Musk does less well because he doesn't get more H1-B workers, too bad.

What's your point?

Of course his motivation is self interest.

"There is one and only one social responsibility of businessтАУto use it resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud".

If I could attempt to tie your two lines of discussion together a little, I think Musk might be right about what he needs, because he is really good at spotting talent. On the other hand, most corporations are definitely not and are shopping based on price alone and just assuming the credentials line up. So in some sense both you and Mimi are roughly correct. Some make good use of H1-B's but many are just buying poor quality workers at low prices (for a variety of reasons.)

My point is that his self-interest is going to screw Americans out of a job.

Businesses do what they want. But if they don't want to hire Americans, they can go broke as far as I am concerned. What a bunch of garbage. B
