excuse me mr glenn, i am just a kitten and we have only done 1 unit of global history but i think maybe you might have this backwards.
it seems like under the monarchies, theocracies, and fascist/authoritarian systems which comprise most of human history the role of journalists has been to parrot and spread the narrative of the people in charge.
mightn’t that imply that journalists traditionally ARE propogandists and that having them seek free expression represents the rare, beneficial exception that flowers under only the correct circumstances and which shouty boss-people will always try to strangle into submission?
because it looks like maybe we had that and like maybe we lost it.
Remember when we laughed at the obvious propaganda of TASS and those ridiculous North Korean "newscasts" praising the dear leader? We were so superior, so sure it would never happen here. Well, here we are.
Since the rise of Fox News, though, I've wondered if I ever really knew what was going on. Whatever issues one may have with them, they've mainstreamed the opposition voice. The propaganda psy-ops are more apparent, more desperate, and less clever now as fewer people consent to go along. The curtain has been pulled back, but we still don't know who's moving the levers. It's surreal to watch so-called news programs (national, local, broadcast, cable) parroting the same words...absolutely mind bending and frightening. I used to joke that they got the same email, but it isn't funny anymore.
We should always be wary of people who make a very good living (almost as good as the trained marxists) on the churn, regardless of their professed ideology.
I think he's conflating mainstream journalists, who do as their bosses tell them (who are told by those in power), with those who write from the shadows to expose the lies and deception of the first group.
oh my goodness no! i am just a nice kitten, certainly not a bad cat! and i quite like mr glen. i just that that maybe he might not have thought about this one too carefully before he spoke.

"People will think what I tell them to think."
Charles Foster Kane (Citizen Kane)
In journalism and history the coincidence of fact with intended belief is rare and volatile.
Imma steal that, use it, and am unlikely to offer attribution! Just being honest.
I am honored..... you could probably word it better I am a retired techie my last exposure to rhetoric and writing was high school.
Dude, I am a techie too, although not retired. Suffice to say your rhetorical chops are well-developed.

The long view of history is enlightening. It reduces the surprise of current events.

I like Greenwald, but you nailed this one, Bad Cat. Please be gentle as you slay subsequent sacred cows, I like my beef tender.

You are right. We have lost a rare and precious thing
I'm a big fan of Sam Harris. Since this happened I've seen Glen Greenwald in a different light: https://samharris.org/dear-fellow-liberal2/
I wonder how Greenwald feels now he's been kicked out of the magazine he started for not being work enough?
Whahaha ... this chap is not the favourite in his debating team.
