A bear and a rabbit are shitting behind a tree together. As they finish up, the bear asks the rabbit, "hey, do you have a problem with shit sticking to your fur?"

"No," the rabbit proudly announces.

...so the bear wipes his ass with the rabbit.

I'm so happy to learn that that joke is multinational!

"Had a mole removed from my ass the other day. Never gonna crap outdoors again" Larry the cable guy.

A bit more serious: always more than 50 meters from the house/camp. Never upriver. Always in a pit - cover and mark it when it's full. You most empathically do not want to step on 2" of soil on top of a two yard deep shit-pit.

It sure was, belts, hair brushes, fly swatters, wooden spoons (many times broken during the event), spatulas, well you get it. Am I telling you more than you want to know about my childhood and personality? : )

Expand full comment

I can totally relate. My wicked grandmother (who died on Friday the 13th no less) carried a wooden spoon in her purse which she assailed me with at whim. Never did like that woman…she had issues, then so did my mom, so said to myself at a young age, ‘the train stops here.’ Never had kids as a result, and am now grateful I don’t, but never have stopped fighting for what I know in my heart to be right in this world. No perpetual victim for me, and damn well sure, no pronouns (victims) for me.

Expand full comment

Want to know how you know the current thing is a scam?…

I live off grid, the government doesn’t want you to live off grid. They make it impossible. You have to say it’s a “camp” in order to get off grid, and even then they come poking around looking for things to ding you on.

They treat a converted shed with no electricity and no plumbing like you’ve built a new WalMart in the woods…

They most definitely do not want you on Solar, with composting toilets and wood burning stoves…

Expand full comment

We are semi-off grid. Solar is connected to the local utility whether you want to or not - and they just cut the buy our solar cost in half. Now, 2 counties in Texas are discussing taxing rainwater collection. So, even here, the lib/government agend is making it's presence known.

Expand full comment

Next - a tax on the air you breathe!

Expand full comment

No comrade. You are misguided. Our dear leaders would never tax the air we breathe. They just want a small fee attached to the carbon we are adding to it. Also a small fee for the plants to remove the carbon from the air for us. They will only use the money to make sure the process is done correctly. It will be a service. Just like the Internal Revenue Service.

Expand full comment

Of course! Our lords and masters long since established that carbon, in all of it's forms, is taxable. And my exhalations, to my sorrow, contain that climate destroying element. It is only right and just that we mere mortals bear the cost of an agency mandated to managing demon carbon.

Thank you for correcting my thought crime.

Expand full comment

What? Tax the rain water you collect?

Expand full comment

I had someone in my hometown go after me because I had two 8000 gal rain cisterns.

I miss them...did I ever get my tax refund? Hell no.

Expand full comment

How can they take away your water tanks?

Expand full comment

they didn't- but some idiot was saying that rain water off my roof wasn't "my property"- and the company that installed them gave me two sets of receipts to get a state refund that just

disappeared! huh

Expand full comment

That’s insane. Honestly, I am dumbfounded.

Expand full comment

That's the word on the street. I read about 12 yrs ago that Oregon wanted to or was going to tax snow melt because you don't own the snow on your roof, the "state" does. If these 2 counties decide to tax RWC (rain water collection), then folks who live in dry/drought areas will be pissed. Given the invasion we have from CA/NY, etc. and the droughts we've had for the past several years, Texas cannot sustain the population growth with just groundwater. Anyone who lives here and doesn't have RWC is insane. It's almost a necessity and if county govts decide to attempt to tax it, I can only imagine the backlash.

Expand full comment

Yeah. They don’t do that here, yet… they calculate the surface area of your roof and tax you for rainwater run off…

Expand full comment

Where exactly do they do that? I’ve never heard of it.

Expand full comment

Just type in rainwater tax, and “illegal to collect rainwater”. Plenty of search results.

Expand full comment

And the barrel you collect it in!

I have done extensive research into this. Florida is filling up fast. Places like Alaska, Montana, Texas, still lots of open spaces if you can stand the weather. The Ozarks - again, weather - how are you with heat and humidity? Some righteous patriot enclaves there, most of them are Christian and would prefer that you share their faith-based ideology. Cheap and beautiful old farms in Kentucky, some near the Amish communities (great neighbors) but again, horrible humidity after living in California. Eastern Washington and Idaho, rural Utah. I lived off grid in NorCal for 20 years, a woman alone, not a dog or a gun (at that time), just going on my reputation as a crazy old witch in the woods. People left me alone. I had some adventures, never felt threatened. That ended five years ago, the cartels have taken over and I have said goodbye to the quiet woods. I miss them. Now looking at Mexico as a very desirable retirement strategy.

Thanks for the ideas! We watched Tucker once about the free country of Hungary(?) I thought I’d check it out. Likely more law abiding than MX? Not sure of weather. We are sticking it out in beautiful, temperate California.

Expand full comment

Law-abiding is not a big issue with me, as I have spent the last three decades in a lawless wild west town, the nearest law enforcement is 1 1/2 hours away - if they come, which they don't. Lawlessness is old hat to us. Think Mexicans in Mexico will be model citizens compared with what we're used to. Hungary is beautiful and absolutely would be a top choice for me as a place to live in Europe. My step-grandson just returned to his home in Scotland after a Grand Tour of Europe with his buds. Prague and Budapest were his favorite places. I have ruled it out, as the weather is too extreme in the winter for this Island girl. We did investigate Spain and Portugal. The weather on the western (Pacific) side of Baja is more or less the same as San Diego, all year round - mid 60s to low 80s. Suits me just fine. And I don't think we could live like kings on $2000 a month in Hungary, as we could in Mexico. Lastly - and this is a big deal - I have been landlocked for 30 years, and this undine is ready to be near her natural home again. I long for the sea, I know the bliss of living on it and mean to have it again.

I know what you mean about missing the woods. I squatted outside Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories in a cabin that "floated" on Great Slave Lake. It got too cold. I had to leave .The Mounties burned it down. Same in Squamish, B.C. next to the dump and the bears. Had to return home. Death in the family. It was right beside the River of Golden Dreams which overflowed its banks one Boxing Day.. Cabin flooded but didn't float away.

Expand full comment

Sounds like we could swap some stories Patricia, you and I, we have both had our share of Jack London moments. I had broken pipes and a flooding cabin one Christmas, fixed pipes in the freezing dark with a flashlight held in my teeth. Creek nearly took me out, wildfires more than once. I have burned furniture to stay warm...and yet in spite of the hardships, or maybe because of them, these places find a deeper place in our hearts and memories, as they have demanded strength, resourcefulness and endurance from us, and in return given us back more authentic lives as well as the many songs the earth sings that most of humankind is not around to hear.

Expand full comment

I am in awe- and mad with respect for you!

Expand full comment

My experience of living off grid is limited to two or three years and perhaps the circumstances were exceptional (when are they not?), yours is authentic while mine was a brief interlude. Notwithstanding a hiatus of 40+ years, I remember the inestimable pleasure of chopping wood and the ineluctable glee of meeting with a light switch. I don't really want to go back over old memories; today's news is enough to monopolize one's mind. But, thank you for the invitation to share stories. Good luck in finding your next homestead. I hope it is better than the one you're leaving and the next one, if needed, better still.

Yes, you can now. They have changed the laws, foreigners can now own property outright through a bank trust called a fideicomiso. You can also go with a long term lease but it's not advisable, should your landholder become greedy, or die and have kids that want to change things up. Best thing, only thing, is to acquire a good real estate attorney to help you. They will take care of all the due diligence and draw up the paperwork, also help you navigate the move. https://beachpleasemexico.com/real-estate-foreigner-in-mexico/

Expand full comment
Sep 6, 2022·edited Sep 6, 2022

I'd say there are many, and I think I'd experience fewer cartel encounters there than I do here, in my own fair town. There is crime, but there is crime here, lots of it. You can get on expat blogs and get the scoop, also read the newspapers there. The bottom line is, cartels and gangs tend to leave gringos - tourists and expats - out of their business, if the gringos stay out of theirs, in other words, don't get involved in shady dealings. The government is very determined to protect the tourist industry, so they look askance on crimes against gringos. Still not safe to drive at night. Graft, corruption and bribery - the legendary "mordida" - are still going on, but it's all pretty much simple and out in the open, so you know where you are, unlike the U.S., where they pretend such things don't happen. I find that refreshingly straightforward. We are looking at Baja, plan a long circumambulation this winter. Friends love Mazatlan, also San Miguel de Allende, big artist colony there. Also Oaxaca. A friend has lived in Puerto Vallarta for years, she loves it, but I find it's getting too big, with big city troubles. Merida in the Yucatan is supposedly very safe but I could never tolerate the heat and humidity. It's a big country, many states, but I demand an ocean and decent weather for my golden years, so that narrows down the search considerably.
