Imagine going to the beach with this guy, you're standing in the surf, feeling the wet sand between your toes as salt water washes over your ankles, there's a glorious sun rising on the distant horizon to the symphony of seagulls and waves, a cool breeze brushing your skin....
"What's to love about this? The sand hurts. The water's cold. God those seagulls are annoying, I wish they'd shut up. Did anyone bring sunscreen? I'm gonna get burned I know it. Let's just go home this sucks."
i think the real point of articles like that is not to make any sort of real point.
it's to draw attention by making people say "WTF" was that and want to engage and fight about it. it's just a trick to grab eyeballs by making people want to argue.
This is the major difference between Substack and regular media. On Substack, we write for readers. In regular media, they write for clicks -- and nothing gets more clicks than clickbait.
I suspect this is a classic example of a would-be agent provocateur exercise. Achieves multiple goals. 1. Create the proverbial 'tempest in a tea pot'. 2. Stir up the chattering classes. 3. Gain, (or create), personal notoriety. 4. Distract attention from whatever our lords and masters are trying to hide this week. Winner all round!
I thought about your comment while walking the dogs on a gorgeous Winter morning. Whole it is fun to have a brief moment of fun regarding the beach comments; unfortunately it’s important to stay on guard or at least realize why this article was written. Everything seems to be weaponized these days.
The days of innocence are long gone. I am finding that even in substack that there people who gently try to draw others into arguments. I have no desire to argue with a stranger. Or even argument someone that I can’t see or smell or touch. It seems a bit of a fool’s game. Don’t get me wrong though, I won’t back down.
I picture this snowballing into a woke cancel culture moment. Walking barefoot on the beach is anti-beach. Think of the sunscreen chemicals, people who litter, how much better off the oceans were during lockdowns. Shut down all beaches. Enter save the ocean selfie protests and Greta thumburg style police photo ops.
I was just saying that I was waiting on the newest debate item, "Are Blintzes Burritos" and "are Pierogi Won-Ton" because we surely need new things to fight about.
Now you must know, I posted below on this thread, and if you intend on responding, I advise you to check that out first before you do something you might later regret.
Yes, I realized that when I got my own little invitation. Clue to spoofiness: A guy who guards his anonymity that well ain't giving out his phone number to anonymous commenters, no matter how admiring they may be.
But sadder still, how many folks choose to read that blather instead of actually looking into information that might be important to know? Not just feet, but HEADS, in the sand.
Not ironic. When did you ever get the impression that the Gates's love to share? I mean, truly share as Jesus teaches us, not in some self-serving-I'm-going-to-make-a-kazillion kind of a way.
The Guardian prints a story showing beach going in a bad light.
Gates foundation financially supports the Guardian, hinting that they want to show the beach in a bad light. (pobrecollie's comment)
Ironic because the Gates's have many beach houses - they see the beach in a good light. That's how I interpreted your comment.
In my comment I state that it's not ironic because they Gates's, recognizing a good thing, don't want to share it with others but want to keep it all for themselves.
Concerning the Guardian, this is also worth noting:
Jimmy Wales
Jimmy Wales is an internet entrepreneur and co-founder of Wikipedia and Wikia. He is a non-executive director of Guardian Media Group, owner of the Guardian and the Observer
Beyond clown world! It has gotten to the point that the only media worth looking at are conspiracy theories because they seem to have a much better chance of being true.
The "official narrative" people are constantly turning people off from some of the best resources for true health: sunshine, fresh air, spending time in nature, seeing faces, in-person and physical interactions, foods that are actually beneficial, etc.
This guy's "anti-sand" opinion is part of the broader "anti-nature" push.
Some guy on Facebook told me that nature is constantly trying to destroy us...and predicted I may not live through this winter without the technological miracle that (in his opinion) protects one against this "deadly" virus.
Yes, why pick on sand? For shame, shame on you bigoted ones, for not considering the feeelings of those who identify as sand. Organize a march for the liberation of sand, for the recognition of sand, for the rights to identify as sand . . .
Are Britain's powers that be getting ready to tell people they can't go to the beach because of the [current thing]? Part of the 15-minute cities crap?
I’m glad to see I’m not the only person who despises sand. I grew up in the high desert, and always hated sand. It’s so painful--you can feel every future shard of glass that each grain is, cutting your skin. I’m aware, however, not everyone feels what I feel so I generally keep my dislike to myself. No one wants to hear it.
In 1998 I might have read this article and felt some validity of my own lifetime perspectives. However, today, despite sharing the perspective, I still wouldn’t consider that article worth the time to read, because these days, reading that instead of reading about this “fringe” group the media is desperately trying to discredit, can get you killed. In 2020, we all suddenly had to become amateur detectives just to stay alive.
Would anyone really pay to read this guy’s writing? I think he should be permanently banned from writing and sent to an abandoned island full of sand by himself for fun 🤩
I am lucky enough to live on the beach! Love love love the sand! At the beginning of the pandemic I was only watching Fox news. No other legacy media news shows. In the last several months I get my news solely on substack. I find it’s the only place that is real and deep and intelligent And thought provoking. And current! Like right now.
From Anthony and Debra Esolen's substack today. A song that I picture taking place on the beach, "Moonglow." It's a song from the Great Depression, when we had other things to care about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCzva7gXs_4&t=8s

and they do not limit this tactic to beaches...

"Tempest in a Teapot" indeed!
Or, as some in the lower 48 like to say, "Dumpster Fire"!
Absolutely distraction. I forgot to say that in my response. I think Jeff Chliders was alluding to that this morning

That's exactly what it is.
I expect AI is going to become frighteningly good at that, soon.
No doubt.
um...."el gato malo".....
~~~~
um...
So are you saying all your doing is trying to start arguments?
It doesn't take much talent to do that.
It lacks merit.
Better to find solutions, but that takes ability.
I like sand twixt my toes.
You paint an impressive picture. I want to go to the beach
Another margarita or two will make it all right.
Dan, is that you?
(Dan is my brother, and you just encapsulated 18 years of living in the same room together)
Shades of Andy Rooney. But he needs better eyebrows.
Didja ever notice how sand gets between your toes at the beach?
Sun setting please, otherwise all the rest is fine.
@SCA,
FYI, I got this same “reply” from “el gato” to a comment elsewhere on this thread.
Spoof IMO.
Reported.
Invasion. Ugh.
Best,
Yes, I realized that when I got my own little invitation. Clue to spoofiness: A guy who guards his anonymity that well ain't giving out his phone number to anonymous commenters, no matter how admiring they may be.
But thanks for your FYI, and best back to ya!
Yep. I can hear that, like he was right here.
But sadder still, how many folks choose to read that blather instead of actually looking into information that might be important to know? Not just feet, but HEADS, in the sand.
🎯
Worth noting that the Guardian gets a fair bit of money from Bill and Melinda.
Ironic, considering that the Gates family owns several beach houses.
Not ironic. When did you ever get the impression that the Gates's love to share? I mean, truly share as Jesus teaches us, not in some self-serving-I'm-going-to-make-a-kazillion kind of a way.
Not sure what you’re getting at. I think you misunderstood my comment.
Wait, I saw this and thought it was fake and referencing that line from Star Wars Episode II. You can't expect me to believe it's an actual headline?
sorry to be the bearer of bad news, mr wesley, but...
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jan/26/who-are-these-people-who-love-to-feel-sand-between-their-toes-i-hate-it
Well I guess we already knew the media had gone to the dark side...
Hahaha https://images.app.goo.gl/J5XWmrDiA9ngiwkaA
That was my first reaction too, Wes!
Why pick on sand?
This guy's "anti-sand" opinion is part of the broader "anti-nature" push.
As Monk said, "nature is dirty!"
I love Monk! 💗
I love Monk.
The technocrats hate nature.
Some guy on Facebook told me that nature is constantly trying to destroy us...and predicted I may not live through this winter without the technological miracle that (in his opinion) protects one against this "deadly" virus.
Holy cow!
I think you have it.
Good point. Maybe it’s causes: strokes? SADS? Tachycardia? Fill in the blank
I have it on good authority that sand is raaaacist.
You ARE aware that simply noticing that confirms that you too are guilty!
No, then he would like it, because “science” would recommend it.
It’s a contributing factor towards climate change 😂😂😂
It’s also racist!
It’s also transphobic, xenophobic and bigotry!
All the phobics 😆
😂😂
sea peoples may be righteously offended
Yes, why pick on sand? For shame, shame on you bigoted ones, for not considering the feeelings of those who identify as sand. Organize a march for the liberation of sand, for the recognition of sand, for the rights to identify as sand . . .
For Heaven’s sake! I forgot to consider those who identify as Sand.
What pronoun do we use for those who think they’re sand? I have limited vocabulary.
Go pound sand 😝 [w/ utmost respect attached]
Missed that one, haha
For shame ei gato maio you dirty scammer! 🤬
For shame ei gato maio you dirty scammer! 🤬
Are Britain's powers that be getting ready to tell people they can't go to the beach because of the [current thing]? Part of the 15-minute cities crap?
Probably. Good insight.
now we're divided again based on:
Sand in toes ✔️
no sand in toes❌️
Why impose such strict artificial limits? Off the top of my head, I can list a baker's dozen of places where sand is arguably not welcome 🤭
For shame ei gato maio you dirty scammer! 🤬
whats to love about the opinions of a fat englishman?
He isn't even a good writer. The article sounds like he banged it out in ten minutes, maybe five.
Not an Englishman. A Croat.
thats like calling me Irish cos my grandparents were, he was born in Quinton, Birmingham England
I blame Climate Change.
Darth Vader hated sand between his toes too.
