I think that at least one reason is that if for a moment they allow an inkling of reason and logic, it will be a slippery slope to thinking critically, listening to evidence and using reason, and then the entire fantasy they are living in will crash around them, expelling them from the warm (or, rather, icy and cadaverous) embrace of the cult.
