It's a lot easier to move to Bluesky than to move to Canada.

Expand full comment

Lots of folx think it's as easy-peasy to move to Canada as it is to move to the USA, because in their worldview all of Canada is Vancouver and it's some kind of multicultural paradise, which it most certainly isn't overall.

Expand full comment

I never understood why Canada was always the proposed destination. Why not Nigeria or Ghana, two English-speaking countries with not nearly as many nasty white people as Canada? And your dollar probably goes farther in those places too.

Belize costs a U. S. citizen around $4000 for permanent residency, plus some other fees and a lot of hoops to jump through. Though if you invest $250k (Buy a big house, start a business, whatever.) you bypass a lot of the hoops and some of the fees.

Expand full comment

Just curious.... Did Belize mandate COVID vaccines? Did they lockdown?

It's totally touristy, you can get along there without speaking Spanish very easily.

Great question -- I think it's because Canadians are perceived as polite, hospitable, when in fact that people-pleasing behavior only leads to more resentment.

Expand full comment

We are polite. But Americans are friendlier.

Expand full comment

Yes, many Canadians are polite. Many also suffer from a serious moral superiority complex, especially in regards to Americans. (I'm assuming the post-er I'm replying to is not one of them.) I'm an American who lived in Ontario for 17 years and worked there for many more years while living just across the border in the U.S. I have a number of Canadian friends, and many more acquaintances, almost all of whom -- in the last years since Trump first became President, particularly -- I would absolutely avoid having political conversations with, or conversations about the U.S., much less, President Trump. Trump is despised by the majority (they blindly believe the trash that media tells them about Trump; yet they don't seem to have a problem with Justin Trudeau as their liberty-sucking, economy-crashing Prime Minister.

Damn! What a great idea. I’m going to send my liberal friends the @ tourist” information on these African paradises. Can’t wait

Expand full comment

I suspect they think that Canada is somehow part of the US territory (like Puerto Rico or something), and that they can just move there legally and permanently without applying to Immigration Canada. (They can stay for 6 months on a visitor visa, but then they have to leave for 6 months.)

Of course, if you have significant money, you can basically “buy” your way into legal residency in almost any country. Most of the “celebrities” promising to leave would be in this category, but they still need to apply, fill out the paperwork, and be approved. Anyone who has been arrested need not apply, btw.

Still waiting. No one seems to be going.

This article also states that prior to the 2016 election, Streisand said that if Trump were to be elected, she would move to either Australia or to KKKanada. In 2024, she said (in the video embedded at the link above), when Stephen Colbert asked her, that she will probably move to England following a Trump victory. We shall not hold our breath awaiting her removal from our continent.

Apparently another way to fast track your way to permanent residency in Canada is get a job with the government. That's what my baby sister did. Went to grad school at UBC and landed a sweet gig with the BC government. gave her residency immediately (and for her British husband) and fast track to Canadian citizenship.

Expand full comment

these people would be great collaborators for Trudeau, sounds like an excellent pathway for them.

Expand full comment

That sounds to me like the way immigration *should* work; it sounds like this couple will bring value to their new land and BC/Canada, reasonably enough, want to encourage their citizenship.

Expand full comment

How's she bringing value to her new land? She works for the government. She's forcing people who create value to pay for her.

Expand full comment

It was an assumption; perhaps TIOK could inform us if the "sweet gig" is for completely worthless work. You are assuming the work is worthless because done within the current governing framework?

"Expatriation is a major life decision with big tax implications for anybody thinking about giving up their U.S. citizenship or long-term permanent resident status. The U.S. Department of State urges anyone thinking about renouncing their U.S. citizenship to be aware that, IN ALMOST ALL CIRCUMSTANCES, IN ADDITION TO GIVING UP THE BENEFITS GRANTED TO U.S. CITIZENS, THE ACT IS IRREVOCABLE. In addition, individuals considering expatriation should carefully CONSIDER THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE U.S. EXIT TAX UNDER SEC. 877A AND THE POTENTIAL FOR CONTINUING U.S. TAX OBLIGATIONS. (emphasis mine)

What is the exit tax?

"Under Sec. 877A, a U.S. EXIT TAX MAY APPLY TO INDIVIDUALS WHO RELINQUISH THEIR U.S. CITIZENSHIP OR ARE LONG-TERM RESIDENTS WHO CEASE TO BE A U.S. PERMANENT RESIDENT. THE tax is designed to make sure that all unpaid taxes are settled before a U.S. citizen or resident withdraws from the U.S. tax system. Individuals subject to the exit tax generally are assessed tax as if they had sold all of their assets the day before they left the country, also known as a “deemed distribution.”" (emphasis mine)

https://rumble.com/v1vqtb4-cbstwit.html

But what exactly were they afraid of? And how did they know it was "safe" to come back like two days later?

Expand full comment

People panned Parler and wrote it off because a "Twitter for conservatives" was too small a niche to be able to sustain itself. But it was never meant to be "for conservatives." It was more like "a Twitter for everyone," since Twitter at that time was only for leftists.

Now the tables have turned on Twitter, and it has become the thing leftists pretending it was back when they were discussing Parler. So they have created a Twitter just for one political faction, and all of the previous criticisms apply.

So they want to punish us by removing their voices from the public square. Fine by me!
