50% still masked outside in my Karenland neighborhood, the trauma goes much deeper than cosplay.

Yup. In my rural, practically deserted seacoast village, the poor creatures wear the face diaper outdoors at our windy hilltop recycling station.

And more people are wearing them at Stop & Shop now than few months ago. It seems to have become a like a pacifier that they can't stop suckling.

the ones wearing the N95 and KN95 masks are the most traumatized. Also the ones wearing the strap to make the two masks fit more tightly. And the few who still wear the faceshield over the masks. And the latex gloves.

You're describing the ones that go outside! A few months back my mum (75) visiting her mother in law invited her neighbour (65) out. She then revealed it was the first time she'd been out of the house for 18months!

At least I can sort of respect those who wear N95 masks. No, they don't do anything to stop the spread of Covid, but at least they're not *obviously* useless, like the cloth masks of T-shirt material most of these NPCs are walking around with (and attempting to shame others about). I don’t respect anyone wearing masks, since all they represent is compliance to the state’s “right” to usurp my bodily control & autonomy. If our maker meant for us to not only breathe thru a filter, he’d have made us that way. If our maker wanted us to rebreathe CO2 & have snot, sweat, secretions & bacteria plastered to our faces, he’d have designed that too.

All that said, any idiots who get off on all of that…you do you

My husband will be going to a basketball game in Tucson next week, the U of A requiring an N95 just to watch. Living in Karenland here... about the same situation... My blood boils when I see kids younger than toddler age peering out from their little masked faces as if in shock. I think they are.

Expand full comment

I had to reprimand two different parents for that during a brief visit to the grocery store yesterday. I calmly tell them to their faces that while their face diaper is merely ridiculous, their kids' are child abuse. Usually I get no response. Yesterday, however, both did that weird thing where they say "thank you". I assume this is some technique they learned in confrontation avoidance classes.

Expand full comment

Your heart may be in the right place, but shaming someone into changing their behaviors or beliefs is counterproductive. Those people love their kids deeply and are doing their own personal best to keep them safe (facts notwithstanding). Accusing them of abuse will, quite understandably, put them on the defensive and only give them more confidence in their position.

I take your point, and I do not have a sense that I am necessarily doing the right or best thing when I make those comments to parents. Still, when I speak to these neurotic creatures, I try to maintain an even, informational tone as opposed to one of accusation, if for no other reason than to avoid alarming the kids.

I often don't say anything, which does not feel good. But sometimes I cannot help myself when I see those little masked faces; I want to rescue the kids from a life of neurosis by waking their parents up.

Expand full comment

Thanks for the thoughtful reply and I appreciate the perspective. It's a hard line to walk. The irony is that one of the things I think would help the most - honest person-to-person communication, complete with tone, body language, and compassionate listening - is really challenging with a face covering and 6' of social distance. My hope is that by just being there, cheerfully buying bananas and smiling like it's 2019, I'll be a good example and a calming influence, even though I suspect they just wish I'd keep my distance.

Expand full comment

Really? Tell me how the parents who volunteered their kids for the initial drug trials were trying to keep them safe. You know, the trials where they can't even suggest the drugs are safe, because that's what the trial is trying to establish.

Expand full comment

Unfortunately, I can't tell you their reasoning - only they know that for sure - but I can offer some possibilities.

At its core, it may just come down to the fear and panic encouraged by mainstream news coverage driving irrational behavior. A Gallup poll conducted in Q4 2020 showed many people believed that covid hospitalization rate was 50%! Not only that, but they also severely overestimated the risk to children (and accordingly underestimated the risk to the elderly). Given these faulty baseline assumptions, I can easily see how terrified parents who've had no reason to mistrust doctors in the past would consider the trials the less risky option.

As for why they believed that... well, that's a whole other topic, but Gato's and others' posts about government control, media narratives, and censorship have a lot to do with it. Good information exists (we're on this forum, after all), but both the technological means of finding it (censored misinformation!) and the mindset to openly and fairly consider a new viewpoint (evil anti-vaxxers!) that could shake someone's entire identity are considerable challenges.

Expand full comment

Confronting evil is the only way to provide instruction to evildoers. Love consists of both confrontation AND charity. The notion that love must only be endless forgiveness and acceptance is how Western society got into this horrible mess over the last 60 years. The left have been so successful, that they even distorted our traditional morality into a heresy, and nobody realized it was happening.

Expand full comment

One problem is that each side equally thinks that the other side is the evildoers. For example, if you read your post from the perspective of a pro-vax, pro-mask person, then I'm the evil that must be confronted! I've cautiously spoken to N95ers at the park - not to lecture or to manipulate, but to understand. They won't convince me and I won't convince them, and outright hostility will make us both unwilling to even listen, but if we can connect just a little at a time, I consider that progress.

Expand full comment

Earlier I was being polite and providing instruction, but obviously that approach had no effect.

Your latest response is just a sly attempt to move the goalposts of the original issue, specifically the necessity of directly confronting evil. You've used what's called the motte and bailey logical fallacy. The only thing you've really accomplished is to act like the tone police. In addition, your appeal to moral equivalence is a standard copout for those who don't have any viable arguments, but are still trying to pretend they represent some kind of 'third way' moral high ground. Moral equivalence is not an argument, it's a logical fallacy and a refuge for sanctimonious cowards.

I don't know who you're trying to fool, although it's quite possibly yourself. As for the rest of us, we see right through you, so I suggest you stop now before you embarrass yourself any further. One more thing: I suggest you look in the mirror if you ever wonder how our society got into this mess in the first place.

There is a very short clip floating around of the reaction of a Nevada grade school class of kids being told they would not have to wear masks anymore - it is only about 20 seconds or so.

Just a thought: approach these parents with vid ready to go "hey have you seen this?" and just hit play. Then say 'have a nice day' and walk away.

Any parent who goes on masking their kid will feel like shit after seeing that - as a parent you want your kid to be happy - and those kids were overjoyed to be free to breathe and communicate and play again as they need to do - it really hits the message home.

If you get a parent that wants to argue 'oh, I see, it's your intent to put your kid at a competitive disadvantage for life.....never mind then."

They will be some assholes in the moment but the parent WILL be thinking about it later - no one wants to disadvantage their kid!

I took my 3yro granddaughter to the playground on Friday. A little boy, slightly older than her, played the entire time with his face diaper on. They played tag and I kept waiting for him to get dizzy and pass out. The 2 grandparents that had brought him, were unmuzzled, so I assume this was some sort of daycare ritual, being played out.

It is a ritual. Satanic ritual. Black masses use masks. And if you don't believe in the spiritual aspect of this lunacy, then look to the secular ritual of masking in China. We are following the demonic communist playbook with masks.

So young, he likely got used to wearing it and now feels uncomfortable without it.

Until my oldest was 5 he wore a costume everyday. We had a bin full of choices and even after school he would take off his school clothes and put spiderman or a power ranger or his little scrubs. He had a school uniform, so that was his school time costume but any other time of day was make believe time. He always wore a cloth mask, it was more of a full face, sometimes full headed cloth mask. If I had young kids during covid-times I would had made them a bunch of dress-up masks, really just so they would have been allowed to wear costumes at school and say it's appropriate masking. Having raised 4 sons, I can absolutely see preschool kids not easily giving up the mask.

I recently read a piece, someone had seen a parent attempt to bribe their 13-14 years-old son to get the vaccine without hassle in exchange for a desired new video game. The boy was firm, he'd had covid, he wasn't going to have the vaccine as well. My first thought was that the author's perspective would be to praise the young man and encourage him to continue to stand up for himself. Nope. It was an essay regarding the poor parenting practice of using bribery to purchase desired behavior.

Do they want to signal they are good children and didn’t need to be made to wear them because they knew just how effective they were intuitively? Or perhaps taking them off now acknowledges they serve no public health purpose and if that is so now, with virus still circulating, they served no public health purpose in the first place. Or the are just so stupid and incapable of thinking for themselves, they need Mummy to tell them to stop wearing them ?

Expand full comment

I have asked some of my mask-wearing friends. A 14yo has been wearing them since he was 12, and he says he is "used to them" because he wears one all day at school, and they keep his face warm in the winter weather, so he just doesn't think about taking it off.

A 50-yo mom is anxious and fearful and admitted to me that since she has received her third jab, she once again feels safe. Also, she has developed acne from the mask wearing, so she prefers covering that up, now.

A 25-yo woman enjoys being able to walk down the street without revealing her expression to anyone. She can scowl at people without them knowing and doesn't "have to smile."

A 60-yo man has received all three of his shots, caught COVID (twice!) anyway, and believes he needs to do his part by wearing his mask while walking around inside, but the danger magically goes away whenever he sits down at a table.

These folks and many others I know live here in Karenland where there is still a mask mandate in place, with helpful reminder signs posted everywhere, and even if they don't believe in the masks, they would rather "go along to get along" and not risk being called out by others for noncompliance. Because, you know, this is a liberal area and if you buck the norm, you might be thought of as a conservative, right wing, racist homophobe transphobe Christian selfish idiot. Keep your nose down, keep your mask on, keep your job, keep your friends, and hope this ends soon.

Very few will take the mask off and be an obvious mask denier. But many think it's stupid -- and do it anyway. Because the government says so.

I invited myself to my parents for Christmas 2020 ("illegal" at the time) and my sisters kicked off. The eldest the most. Then she demanded we had a front lawn distanced gift-giving. In the middle of which I walked behind her and fake-spat in her hair. She burst out crying, my 18year old son burst out laughing. Hey I'm the younger brother so goes with the territory.

Anyway she recovered enough to then hypocritically need the toilet and went inside the house and then made herself a coffee.

2021 not much better I haven't spoken since she and her partner accused me and my family of endangering everyone "like waving a loaded gun around" by not being vaxxed.

Hey ho.

I know this is controversial, but if you are are helping financially or cosigning on loans, etc, I would stop unless your child goes to a nonindoctrinating college. Because it is hurting these students more than it's helping them, so you don't want your money going to an organization that is actively abusing your kid both psychologically (toxic ideas that ruin their relationships) and physically (vaccine mandates). We have a college ready student and believe the most loving thing to do is only offer financial support towards opportunities that help her thrive. Thankfully, she gets it!

I used that WHO study many times in trying to show people that masks don't work. The CDC actually published a study in 2020 that came to the same conclusion:

"In our systematic review, we identified 10 RCTs that reported estimates of the effectiveness of face masks in reducing laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infections in the community from literature published during 1946–July 27, 2018. In pooled analysis, we found no significant reduction in influenza transmission with the use of face masks (RR 0.78, 95% CI 0.51–1.20; I2 = 30%, p = 0.25) (Figure 2).

Disposable medical masks (also known as surgical masks) are loose-fitting devices that were designed to be worn by medical personnel to protect accidental contamination of patient wounds, and to protect the wearer against splashes or sprays of bodily fluids (36). There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza."

https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/5/19-0994_article

Of course, that didn't stop them from them publishing another article claiming that masks were likely responsible for the magical disappearance of flu last season:

"The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent implementation of nonpharmaceutical interventions (e.g., cessation of global travel, mask use, physical distancing, and staying home) reduced transmission of some viral respiratory pathogens (1). In the United States, influenza activity decreased in March 2020, was historically low through the summer of 2020 (2), and remained low during October 2020–May 2021 (<0.4% of respiratory specimens with positive test results for each week of the season)."

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7029a1.htm?s_cid=mm7029a1_w

They'll even go all in, and as el gato pointed out yesterday, publish a "study" that claims in its introduction that mask mandates resulted in a "statistically significant" reduction in the rose of COVID-19 cases, but if you read, the reduction was less than 0.75% on the first 20 days after such mandates and never measured even 2%. Of course, a 2% reduction in the rise in cases is not statistically significant and there is no evidence that masks themselves were responsible (correlation does not equal causation).

Thanks, gato, that articulates perfectly why I refuse to wear a mask at Mass. The parish church is holy ground, sacred space specifically anointed and consecrated to the worship of God. Called up the teacher and said he is to NEVER be forced or made to wear a mask. No way I want to start that precedent.

Two sad but hilarious aspects of the theater are that N95s are not earloop masks, so those are all counterfeits. Second, there is no N95 mask approved for use by children, period.

Now if anyone says anything to me about "where's your MASK!" I just point to my hat and say "I've got this. It does exactly the same thing."

Masks served a purpose, albeit a very sinister one.

And the ones who have "dutifully" worn their giant devil's diaper get sick and ask, "why"? And yet they still dutifully wear their diaper (after all, "they" said we have to...). It's mind boggling. And then there are us "amateurs" who have actually worn masks for decades (on the job) and know what they can and can't do... we are ignored or called deniers.

Using your favorite non google search engine, enter the subject "git-mo detainees face masks". The mask mandate has never been about stopping the spread of disease, ever. And how many people have we all seen riding alone in their cars, windows up and masks on. Totally subjugated!

Even just the physics of masks for slowing the spread of viruses predicts they'll be next to worthless. The filter layer of a surgical mask is the tightest layer of material, but that layer still has pores at least 5 microns wide.

When suspended flu particles were sized up, the median size was just 1 micron. Half of flu particles are submicron. Flu and SARS-CoV-2 are similar-sized virions, so it can be expected that half of all suspended SARS-CoV-2 is ALSO submicron.

Upshot: The smallest pores in a surgical mask are still 5 times larger than they need to be to let at least half of all suspended SARS-CoV-2 particles get through them.

The gaps between the mask and your face may be dozens of microns in size. If there are a few 20-40 micron gaps after you put your mask on, then how hard will it be for a 1-micron COVID particle to get through?

If a basketball hoop was 20-40 times the diameter of the basketball, then anyone could make the shot -- from anywhere on the court.

The problem with that analysis is that it's based on the size of the virus particle, when the virus particle does not travel solo. It's attached to something - a droplet or whatever - and it's the size of the droplet or whatever that needs to be addressed in the context of the layers of a mask. AFAIK, that is.

That's what they said because that was the only way masks can work even in theory. If the virus is airborne, it's already entering your body through your uncovered eyes. This is why they had to quickly walk back the 'airborne virus' talk fairly early in the pandemic. If the virus is airborne masks CAN'T work.

(Even their theory was wildly incorrect, though. Let's imagine that my mask DOES stop that water droplet with the virus inside. Now the droplet evaporates. What happens next time I breathe out?)

Actually, virion size of SARS-CoV-2 is less than that of the measles virus (less than 0.22 microns). I actually was talking about the particle size which the virions would be suspended within.

And the truly neurotic are still driving around in the cars with masks on, alone, with the windows up.

“ masks were a symbol of submission and tribal allegiance to a pseudoscientific virtue cult.” Amen. Amen!
