Chilean poet Pablo Neruda's poem "Oda al gato" (Ode to the Cat) does very well in expressing the inscrutable perfection of the cat. In both Spanish and English:

oh that is a beautiful poem. Don't know enough Spanish to comprehend without the translation, but read it out loud and it sounds so much better in Spanish ! Thanks !

We have two cats in our neighborhood that live a few doors down, named Rhyme and Reason. They have almost exactly the same coloring, but Rhyme has a white spot on her back where Reason does not. Rhyme and Reason are very friendly and will walk with you for awhile if you pass by and then return home when they get tired or bored. In 2020 (true story) Reason went missing. We suspect Reason was enticed by treats to move into another (evil catnapper’s) household. We can’t prove it, but conspiracy theories abound. We don’t think Reason is gone so much as he has been sequestered. Rhyme seems unbalanced since Reason left, she is still friendly but has less energy and vitality. We hope one day Reason will return.

All this is to say, guard EGM closely. We can’t afford to lose any more intelligent cats.

Reason disappeared in 2020 in more ways than one.

My cat named Common Sense also went missing in 2020.

I too hope that one day Reason will return.

While everyone is exchanging gato stories: Gato-less at the moment, as our last 3-legged fearless fox-chasing animal shelter gato died suddenly of a congenital condition. But I never forget the two most influential gatos of my childhood. Ok 3. The first two, Squeaky and Fart, lived next door to my aunt. They sat in the front window and policed the neighborhood. But squeaky was a little "slow". While Fart never missed a bird or insect passing by, Squeaky would have a delayed reaction and then usually swat Fart. Provided us with endless entertainment. The other was Lal Kitten. A pendulous male cat owned by my neighbor that would climb half way up the screen on our porch, get stuck, and set about wailing a mournful 'Laaaaaaallll..." . He never learned how to meow, but he sure could Lal.
