My birds will have to suffer now because most of the sunflower seeds come from that region. Prepare to starve Birds. Do your patriotic duty!! Squirrels—you are on your own. I know for a fact you will eat plastic! And rubber hoses. Hmmm. I’d like to take a rubber hose to a few people.

Crisis = opportunity: I immediately decided to add sunflowers to my garden. Just male sure to get seed varieties.

Expand full comment

I love the huge tall ones. Watch the birds hang on and eat.

i grew a lot of sunflowers last year, and I've been a devoted seed saver for years. hardest part of growing sunflowers is the chipmunks- the plants have to grow enough to have stems like pencils before the chipmunks can't nip them off. for all my efforts last year- covering, spraying with hot pepper, etc, i still lost about half of what i planted.

the persistence and ingenuity of chipmunks is admirable.. they are good role models for us in our own lives,. we might outwit the march of tyranny by learning from our little furry friends.

but does anyone have any tips for keeping them from eating all my sunflowers? they have so many other things around here for food....

Expand full comment

I'm in Europe, thus no chipmunks. So I am not sure if this works on them as well, but the deer started staying away from my vegetable garden when I went to the zoo, bought tiger and lion feces as fertiliser, and dug it in. (Apparently it is a thing -- already came in specially marked and branded bags and everything.)

Expand full comment

lol ! you sure reached for the top-shelf weapon, didn't you?. it's a good strategy you have. the big cats are apex predators capable of eating chipmunks like popcorn, and they're intelligent. it might make my chipmunks reassess their position.... i'll have to look for some of that stuff and use it to fertilize my sunflowers

Expand full comment

chipmunks? The bunnies ravage mine every year. two years ago, I went through the pain staking trouble of buying chicken wire at Homie Depot and making little fences (save the metal hardware from campaign lawn signs lol) I also use tomato cage fencing. Get creative 😂😱😂😂

Expand full comment

i did about the same to tame my bunnies. i got the one inch wire mesh fencing (the kind used for lobster pots) in rolls and went around the entire perimeter of my garden with it, and made some small cages too. stuck in the ground a bit and the bunnies won't bother to dig under it. bunnies and i are friends now. i always keep some nice clumps of grass and clover around for them and i don't use chemicals. we reached a diplomatic solution

but the chipmunks climb as well as burrow, they're more acrobatic than bunnies and far more persistent. bunnies only eat so much in one sitting. chipmunks store food as well. my chipmunks have huge warehouses and seed silos all over the place. they never stop. i watch them in admiration, but also dismay. if only they'd use their skills to bring down the "new world order" and let my sunflowers grow.

I save all that election sign stuff. The core boards are awesome and that hint for the holders is great! I’m changing my political party this year. I live on a corner so I always get asked. Sorry no Democrats soiling my land this year.

Expand full comment

In the past I've started them indoors in peat pots. That way, they had no problem with transplanting. At least ime!

Expand full comment

i start them in peat pots too, but by the time their stems would be thick enough that the chipmunks won't bother with them, the plants would be about three feet high! i have to plant them into the gardens earlier than that, then spray some hot pepper and dish soap on the stems as a deterrent. it helps a bit, but the chipmunks still take about half the plants.

they work in teams. they're stealthy, and can get around any barrier. they are the military special forces of the animal world.

Chipmunks are cute but just as diabolical as squirrels. I used to keep bird food in the garage. Not now —they learned it was there. I was outside one morning and looking in the garage window there was a little chippy face staring back at me.

I've got tons of chipmunks, bunnies and groundhogs. The baby groundhogs are really cute but eat like lawnmowers. It's almost scary to watch... and there go a lot of plants

For many people, the idea of being cut off from family is really harsh. But in reality, many of these people are dysfunctional at least, mentally disordered at their worst. Some can be like emotional rabid dogs. Do you want to expose yourself to that? Is that healthy? No.

Walking away permanently or even for a period of time for your mental and emotional health is not a bad thing. It's a survival strategy that one has to take, especially if they have something like a personality disorder.

Expand full comment

Bingo. The bottom line is, as I learned in my early 30s I was apparently supposed to be an abortion via hysterectomy, until a nosy relative intervened. Hence the family mantra "Mary ruined it. Mary ruins everything."

Well guess what? They ruined everything for me too. A toxic mess of narcissistic assholes, and I was done with spending my life trying to clean up their shit & trying to start over.

I am still the only person I know who was called down to the high school principal's office because of my mother's bad behavior. Yeah, he asked me to have a talk with her. 🙄

Expand full comment

I never said that but it became more and more clear as I got older that my Mother felt I had ruined her life, that I was the reason she had to cut short her career, get married and move to the US.

She first called me a slut when I was five.

We had a complicated relationship and I felt a lot of relief when I stopped trying to get her to love me as much as my little sister.

I know she did love me.

I kept the stormy relationship with her but was careful over the years.

When she was terminally ill, I was the one she last spoke with. I was on the hospital bed with her and she was frightened and I was cradling her and soothing her like a baby to go to sleep that it was all going to be okay.

And it will be.

The reason I share this is so y'all (Not just Mary) know that they DO love you. They just have their demons.

Expand full comment

My mother hated babies & children. This was well known within the extended family.

Her problem was was extreme narcissism. She had been sick as a baby & her mother over protected her as a result. Her older sister was made to wait on her, she learned to feign illness to get special treatment. She treated everybody like servants, incurring resentment everywhere.

In hindsight I believe it was a kind if Munchausen (sp?) Syndrome, that became by proxy. For example, when I was 14, the 1st time my parents went away for the weekend & left me locked out in the street, she called at 10pm & was clearly shocked & angry when I answered the phone.

She clearly expected me to not answer. What was her end game? To have a "missing child" emergency?

She used my sisters & I as excuses all the time for her crazy behavior. As did my father.

They were a match made in hell.

Until then, I thought she was the smartest, funniest, coolest big sister in the world. On the + side, she set me free. And I see her much more clearly now. Prolly a triple-jabbed, lawyer-Karen.

The last time I saw my eldest sister after a couple invites, I left work early on a Friday & drove 7 hours for a weekend visit. The screaming abuse started immediately. I spent 2 days walking around with her following & screaming at me & hee husband following her, begging for her to stop screaming at me.

"I AM NOT SCREAMING AT MARY!!"

"I'M STANDING RIGHT HERE! YES YOU ARE SCREAMING AT HER!!!"

"AM NOT!!!"

"YES YOU ARE!!! YOU'VE DONE NOTHING BUT SCREAM SINCE SHE WALKED IN THE DOOR!!! SHE DROVE 7 HOURS TO SEE YOY AND ALK YOU'VE DONE IS SCREAM ABUSE AT HER!!!"

She actually invited me back a few more times.

For some odd reason, I never found the time. Eventually she stopped asking & I'm sure that became another "bad bad Mary" family smear.

In New Jersey, the government in Newark voted to revoke the licenses of two Lukoil gas stations in the city. Senator Cory Booker backs this move, saying that the employees should be able to find other jobs since so many places are hiring. Hopefully that will be the case. But this is a minority, urban community where I would bet the employees walk or bike to work. Will they be able to find a job within that distance? What about the owners? Are they supposed to just open another gas station? And what if this happens to every Lukoil in the state or the country? Nothing like putting people out of work again. This is Wokeness gone mad.

Just missing one paycheck could mean not being able to pay rent, but I guess Cory Booker isn't concerned about employees. Then there's the question of how Newark justified revoking the gas station licenses.

It does place ex-employee in a tough situation. How are you going to rob the gas station you used to work, when the local government has put it out of business (perhaps illegally) just for political correctness?

Seriously, in the "old days" things like this did not happen, unless there was a specific declaration from (usually) the Federal Government, declaration of war, etc. I'm not an attorney, but I'm pretty sure that "sanctions" don't justify violations of the law against a legally established business in the USA. However, "rule of law" doesn't seem to mean much these days, as "Russian oligarch" Yacht owners are discovering in Europe, even if (as seems likely) they have no connection whatsoever to Russia. How long before I'm declared a domestic terrorist and my bank account is seized, because I voted for an out-of-favor candidate, or I repeated "misinformation" on the internet? Can't happen here? Are you sure?

'Tory'- is the name of the british conservative party - so the word implies white slave owning conservatives have a right to order wamyn about.
