The hardest part about 10 days to flatten the curve is the first 20 months.

Expand full comment

I'm getting real tired of this "circuit breaker" analogy. First off, it's bullshit. You don't shut down and restart an entire country like flipping a switch. Second, I'm an electrician and I can tell you one does not simply shut off a circuit without very careful consideration of what impact it will have.

At what point do we all understand that getting Covid, even the original version not the lightweight version Omicron, does not have people dropping dead in the street?

Expand full comment

Maybe all that dropping in the street was people in covid vaccine trials.

Expand full comment

Let's not forget the fake Chinese propaganda videos from March 2020 of government actors falling down instantly next to other government actors in bunny suits on the street, but still putting their hands out to break their fall.

Expand full comment

The 'dead' people breaking their falls would have been hilarious if I didn't know what came next.

Expand full comment

In March 2020 there have been fake videos that people were literally collapsing out of nowhere. Thanks to vaccines, this is now real!

Now THAT makes sense...dropping like well-conditioned young athletes on soccer fields.

Of course, I'm just a crazy conspiracy theorists. So, I'm sure I'm reading far more into this than is warranted.

I was thinking earlier around both your original post and this. There’s been a couple of premier league and European football matches cancelled due to outbreaks in teams and the reporting is “oh no, last thing they wanted was to have to reschedule a game, busy time over Christmas blah blah”, not “I hope these guys are going’s to be ok, what with the new super variant that’s going around “. Then on the other hand, there was another one that went off clutching his chest last weekend and the reaction is “terrible to see I hope he’s going to be ok” and then move on and talk about the game, rather than “wtf is going on here this is getting to be way more than a coincidence now”. When Christian Erickson collapsed in the euros it was all they talked about for a couple of days. It just strikes me as odd and may be more to do with it being sports reporting than anything, but they seem to accept that getting covid isn’t necessary a big deal, and ignore what’s actually quite a big deal regarding the health of the players. It’s happening in the lower leagues too.

Interesting article here about Sergio Aquero, written before he announced his retirement today

https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2021/11/02/61813aecca474150748b460c.html

The doctor says one thing I thought all along, even with Erickson. At this level, they’re some of the most tested athletes there are, there’s no way an underlying heart condition could get through all of that. He was only at Barcelona for 6 months and would have undergone a barrage of tests before signing.

Contrast with road cycling, which is a hell of a tough sport on the heart, and I’ve not heard of anything in that sport except 1 guy possibly, and one who had to retire after getting covid, so pretty even there

Expand full comment

The announcers have been leaned on. They'd probably love to start talking about it. But you know, jobs...

Expand full comment

I’m with you yes. it’s the machine feeding itself again though. We have to have sports reports between 6am and 8 am at 25 minutes past the hour Monday to Friday. In the first lockdown I’d laugh out loud listening to the sports slot on the morning news talking about how there was no sport. Anywhere. In the world. But hey, we have a schedule

Expand full comment

The response I inevitably get is that if we had not (insert your own favourite useless strategy: masked up, got jabbed, locked down, etc) then we WOULD see things so much worse. Impossible to argue, even with the excellent comparative studies that we have seen recently. Because the fear mongering has done its job.

Expand full comment

We always have Florida...

Expand full comment

"sheer numbers will outweigh severity". That's academic logic for you. "This illness doesn't make you sick but it infects so many people that we need to lock down!" Not only is that moronic on its face, but it actually prevents natural immunization. How dumb do you have to be to buy this crap?

Expand full comment

Whatever happened to having a cold and just eating some broth and drinking some water? I mean, mild symptoms of anything never warranted a trip to the emergency room did it? Now we go rushing to the hospital if we have a headache and a runny nose? WOW.

Expand full comment

Remember when they said viruses could not be treated with drugs and to stay home, drink liquids and rest???

Expand full comment

I sure do!

Expand full comment

This happens when people are no longer used to having the least bit of anything ! They forgot how it is to have a cold for goodness sakes.

Expand full comment

I am pretty sure it can happen. My last cold was when my 6-month old grandson dribbled on me....and now he's a sophomore in college. I am having a hard time getting too excited over Covid, despite all the efforts of the scare-mongers (and all the stories about people who were "so healthy" and died anyway!

Expand full comment

At all depends on the definition of healthy. Some people say taking less than 10 pills a day is healthy !

Expand full comment

Well, that's something each person has to work out for himself. For gawd's sake don't give anyone the idea that THEY can decide whether YOU are healthy or not... next thing you know, they'll be making the declaration FOR you.

Expand full comment

That is exactly what doctors do. You go to the doc for one thing and they measure 20 other and want to prescribe you at least a few rounds of antibiotics. I thought this was american way, but it turns out docs in Europe do it too now. Dad just told me that the yearly bloodwork they have now, should be done twice yearly, at their cost of course. No thanks. I will decide when I am sick. PS all the statistics they handle are just that - they do not talk about you but about the average person. Neither of us is.

Expand full comment

I've just "remembered" a cold. Nasty head cold for a few days after 2 years of nothing since mild Covid March 2020. I've taken 2 negative LFT's to pacify a few people who assume it must be The Virus. I remind them that other viruses are available!

Expand full comment

Yeah! And a cold can make you really, really sick. People are just nuts.

Expand full comment

I've heard that 6% die of those hospitalised for a common cold - unusual I know, but happens. We normally cope well with the common cold (a coronavirus) but when we don't it's more serious than Covid.

Expand full comment

Now you run to the hospital, and if you have covid they tell you to go home and eat some broth and drink plenty of water.........

Expand full comment

And whatever you do, don't take any of that awful poison Ivermectin! We want you near death when you show back up here, so we can hook you up to a vent for $20K/day for the three months until you die.

Expand full comment

You forgot to add the run!deathisnear drug and the $39k hospitals get for each person they put on a vent. 😒

I heard it while watching the Texas Global Covid Summit supposedly from Dr Ryan Cole, but I also read in RFK Jr.'s Fauci book that it's what nurses call remdesivir, so I don't know who coined it originally.

Expand full comment

It's interesting, but many of the largest "healthcare" systems in the US don't even want to *see* you in the hospital if you have or believe you have COVID. For example John Muir out of California (I believe the largest in the state) is not seeing COVID-possible patients and we're 2 years into this nonsense!!!

Expand full comment

Yes, that was what I was thinking myself.

Expand full comment

Pretty dumb, I think. Does anyone have a count of how many people per day/week/year contract and live through the common cold? Yeah, I didn't think so. THAT is how we need to be looking at this O-Moron virus.

Expand full comment

Totally right. Many people do, and a neglected cold can become bronchitis or pneumonia and many people die every year from it. Common colds can be coronaviruses and I think we can now list this one as a common cold, too, and stop the masquerade. I like your renaming. OMoron !

Expand full comment

I think that most people who have a cold can determine when it has gotten out of hand and is turning into bronchitis or pneumonia. We're really not so stupid.

Expand full comment

Exactly. I've had lung issues my whole life and I know when it's time to get some help. But now, I would rather stick my head in a bucket of Vicks than go get "help" in one of these chopping blocks posing as doctor's offices/hospitals.

I had an interesting experience a few months ago. The nurse there was trying to scare me saying that I could have lost my life cycling up to the docs and that I had to call my wife to take me to the hospital. Which I did, while being a little cynical as I actually felt quite fine while the nurse was trying very hard to panic me. At hospital nurses there were saying 'you're fine, this is nothing to worry about'. Eventually seen by a great nurse who told the doctor to go away and who listened to me and then said 'you're fine' and there's nothing wrong with you and gave me a 'terrain theory' way of dealing with the issue and explanation. I wonder what would have happened if I'd let the Salvation Army style nurse at the docs rooms get me admitted.

I live in Florida but listen to a classical radio station from London. The Brits are so weird with their NHS. All through 2020 I hear ads telling sick Brits to "stay home, protect the NHS". Bizarre when you consider its the UK taxpayers who fund the NHS. If you can't use it when you are sick, when can you?!!! The population seemed to have obeyed as there was an uptick in heart attacks, stillborns, etc.

I despise their desire to obtain tenure at any cost so they can sit on their asses the rest of their lives and wallow in self-adulation. I hate these institutions and their money-grubbing for grants." Left and got a job in finance.

C'mon its only a 10 day circuit breaker. Its not like we've tried anything like this before.

Expand full comment

The language is so reminiscent of scam artistry, even apart from the pseudoscientific foundations. The use of jargon that is ridiculous and unnecessary ("circuit-breaker" as opposed to what other kind of lockdown? they've always sold it this way), the combination of firm promises that appeal to shared values (just 10 days, it's to protect Christmas, it's to protect the NHS) ... but not without with huge asterisks (reassess at Christmas), reflecting the belief of the scammer (a well-founded one!) that they are going to piss people off when they reveal the swindle. "I TOLD you in the fine print that I was scamming you".

BTW, why are they so obsessed with doing it now? Is there really some kind of ultra-precise model that gives us such an exact prediction? No. Measurement error, problems with model specification, endless ways to correct for heteroskedasticity and non-linearity that produce different results, etc. -- and to say nothing of the fact that throughout the world there were huge death spikes in the midst of harsh lockdowns, such as in Canada, Chile, Peru, Colombia, and the UK for that matter. (I am a PhD candidate finishing my diss. in, let's say to protect my identity, applied social statistics; no one takes this kind of Potemkin Village science seriously. Yes, we all see it in journals, but everyone knows that it is bogus).

So, why? Because if there's no disaster and there's no restrictions, they likely lose their last shred of credibility.

Expand full comment

Why right now? Because when they say it's working and must be extended through New Year's, they'll make everybody absolutely miserable, and the normal holiday suicides will quadruple, and the demon-beings that run this shit-show will have everything they wanted for Christmas...

Expand full comment

Exactly. While everyone is miserable they go to the Cayman Islands on vacation, the whole beach to themselves because no one dares to travel, they can stay 3 or 4 weeks now and they will surely use the public's money to do that

Expand full comment

They want a longer Christmas holiday ? Probably paid by taxpayers ? They want to be alone in the resort they booked ? Just a few ideas

Expand full comment

Great analysis. They are doing exactly what every school board shrieking banshee did right before the school year started. Demanding the continuation of every possible restriction because they were worried that when the children returned to school, that there would be no cold-pocalypse, and all their past abuses would be exposed as completely unnecessary.

Here's a question: if there had never been variants Alpha through whatever came before OMyGodCron -- if this version were the initial novel virus -- would anyone have even noticed that there *was* a novel virus circulating? Yet because it appears after two years of neurotic panic attacks, it's going to destroy civilization as we know it.

My vote for Person of the Year is Anders Tegnell.

“Tegnell’s underlying argument is that Covid-19 isn’t going away any time soon, meaning sudden, severe lockdowns will ultimately prove ineffective in addressing the longer-term threat.”

It was clear from the outset to anyone rational that this virus would be with us for a long time and that any efforts to address it would need to be sustainable.

But lockdowns and school closures aren’t sustainable. They are so destructive that that they could only ever be very short-term measures which, for this virus, are useless and ephemeral.

Tragically, catastrophically and heroically, Tegnell was almost alone in defending Reason against the global tidal wave of irrational Covid hysteria.

As he observed, early on:

‘The world went mad with lockdowns’.

Let’s hope the world does not go mad again.
