"Disinformation studies" is an emerging multidisciplinary specialty that brings together Fascists, Democrats, warmongers, ESG/DEI commissars, public health "experts", and their Karen enforcers.

As well as establishment Republicans and other brain-dead apparatchiks.

All they can do is go meta on their lies, officialize them, professionalize them and philosophize on them. It's the only move. Absurdity results and we can expect lots more of it.

Enforcers with names like "Caroline Orr Bueno." You can't make this shit up it's too perfect.

IтАЩm with you. The name looks made up and suspicious to me.

And how is this "emerging"? Propaganda has likely been around since the beginning of any form of government.

Expand full comment

Propaganda has been around forever, yes, but the coordination of mass censorship and surveillance, along with the distribution and enforcement of official narratives -- all under the control of unelected and unaccountable government bureaucrats -- hasn't been a thing the first rise of Communism and Fascism nearly a century ago.

All of this is even more dangerous today because of the vast technologies available to monitor and crush dissent.

Indeed...and people are weaker and more reliant now

Which is truly sad, as many of the same technological tools available to the state to control us are also available to us to at least understand the depth of the corruption, duplicities, and manipulations of the state, as well as the MSM.

That so many choose to not avail themselves of the opportunity for knowledge and perspective in lieu of shutting down their brains and turning on CNN, then belittling and attacking others for not mimicking the party line is truly the saddest thing about America in 2023 -- and likely beyond.

Is this the second fall of Rome, where the emperor fiddles (Biden) while the city burns (East Palestine, for one)?

I was going to self censor...but...

The goal should be for people to not feel like they're bargaining with self censorship on behalf of the Imposer

The Imposition itself is the scaffolding and the valence that keep censorship upright and bonded. You break that and the entire edifice comes down.

If that's done, then propaganda is rendered satirical.

Kind of like with frivolous lawsuits or politically motivated indictments: The process is the punishment.

Well, I'm glad you came to your senses!

Can you expand this thought, for a friend that read this, & is confused? I see satirical propaganda everywhere. I also see dead people. ( in the news) ЁЯЩИ I mean, my friend does. Thanks Ryan.

The terminus of censorship is propaganda completely subsuming satire. Once completely fused it is used merely as a tool for the authoritarian to alter reality by narrowing choices until there is only one choice - making the two indistinguishable.

Censorship is the vehicle by which etymological overlap, of all forms of writing/ expression (communication), becomes complete, thereby eliminating reference amongst them. This allows a positive feedback loop of pruning language/ideas/semantics/nuance until it's denuded and there's only one reference; that which is "shrink-wrappped", approved and dessiminated by the authoritarian to the populace.

The only content allowed for consumption is meant to serve the purposes of the draftee. For all intents and purposes, at this point, history has stopped because the population has been denied the ability to have their own interpretation of history - the words to do so are twisted, watered down, inverted or simply obliterated: BONDAGE

If we are able to break the most powerful bonding element of censorship (self censorship) then propaganda could be rendered to satire because the overlap in methods (exaggeration, absurdity, silly words, caricature, dramatic, etc.) and synergistic nature of the two is seen for what they both are; FICTION

If you know the truth then propaganda would read like comedy right? You would laugh at it in it's absurdity because you have a reference to reality. The shrink-wrappped packages of propaganda become spoof.

In practice, satire can subsume propaganda in the abstract and render it inert, because it is one of the best vehicles for holding it up to censure by mocking/ridiculing it before it makes people feel like they must self censor.

Isn't that ironic?

Approved speech only is described very clearly in 1984. Without the words available to express disapproval (or much else), concepts, original thought,, ideas etc are no longer possible. Here in NZ this is happening at a pace. All community colleges/Polytechnics have lost their autonomy and are part of one big one. The boss of this has issued a 'style' guide which eliminates the use of words such as wife, husband and promotes the use of they/pronouns etc. He claims no one has complained and its not monitored. However, there is no options given in the quotes available which all start "At XXX we use (blah, blah). There were no comments supporting this move in the article I read but the changes will go ahead as planned.

It's very scary. Even in the US it literally feels like totalitarianism has opened the door onto the abyss.

I don't know how to explain it other than it's a sensation of an invisible hand starting to crush down.

Expand full comment

Very scary here also as I work in education. For years, people have "gone along to get along" without really accepting the narrative but wanting to keep their jobs. Also up to now, it's been easier to spot what was a fad and would fade (and can thus be easily ignored) but I don't think this is going away. Wish I had some answers but currently working to get out of debt so I can retire.
