From the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

The major problem — one of the major problems, for there are several — one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them.
To summarize: it is a well known fact that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job. To summarize the summary of the summary: people are a problem.

I really need to re-read Hitchhiker's Guide. It's been too long and I could use some good laughs.

That which keeps us human seems to be diminishing. I had only read about Sanpaku eyes in the context of human health before, but did not know the connections to human behavior were so strong. It's like the ultimate 'uncenteredness' where even the eyes are not centered. Crazy.

The vast majority of people who run for office should be disqualified on the basis of the pathologies behind their desire to control how other people live their lives. We would be better served (left more alone) if legislatures were part-time and populated with randomly selected citizens for a short term once in their lives. Short of that, single term limits should apply to all public office, eliminating the inherent conflict of interest in re-election as well as the aspirations of career politicians.

Expand full comment

I'm not even sure why we need politicians. (we actually don't). All we really need is a defence force to look after our borders. That can be paid for by a levy. Leave the local communities to look after their own affairs as they see fit - and organized on a PR basis. This is how the island of Jersey operates (Channel Islands). Switzerland has a similar system where proposed laws can be directly challenged by the people as well as both houses in their parliament. (neither house can over rule the other).

A decentralized socioeconomic system may be achievable but it is much more complex than what you are saying. It is a case of networks vs hierarchies. Networks are complex, just as our economy is, but can be self-adapting once setup properly. Peter Joseph "The Zeitgeist Movement" has a lot of ideas on how to achieve that.

Expand full comment

Absolutely it’s more complex. I realize that. Didn’t want to get into complexities just initiating some discussion maybe.

Single-term limits AND limits private sector associations post-term, especially for those who were on various oversight and regulatory committees, etc.

The vast majority of people who get into office are bought or blackmailed by the billionaire and trillionaire aristocracy so they in fact only serve them, not their constituents. This is a problem the founding fathers did not anticipate. When you have a World concentration of extreme wealth, it is inevitable that bad actors will use that wealth to control our governments. To have a functioning Democracy in modern times you need both extreme and ironclad means to prevent corruption.

100% public financed elections - no exceptions. Double or triple the pay of politicians. And a good pension after one term. In return after serving you cannot work in any private industry, you could only work in government. You can't get any book deals, speech fees, presents. You can't become a lobbyist. In fact ban lobbyists. Your closest relatives will be under severe scrutiny by a public tribunal for any indication of bribery. You have to be mean, nasty and extreme when it comes to corruption. And if any politician doesn't like it, too bad, don't run, quit, the job isn't for you. Let someone who accepts total scrutiny run. Funny how we lowly serfs are expected now to accept 24/7 surveillance, monitoring and severe restrictions coming. Hows about we apply that to politicians?

The existing system is designed to attract those who want to rule over others in predatory ways. Examine the incentives. Incentives must be realigned. All individuals must be held accountable for the harm they cause, including politicians. Absent proper incentives the system will remain perverted.

Yup - nothing like politics - the ability to hold coercive power over people and their stuff- is as intoxicating to the psychopaths and sociopaths among us.

While the rest of us are trying to be productive, contributing members of society, they are plotting the next move to arrogate more power and plunder to themselves and their cronies...

In Sweden, you can be fined or sentenced to up to two years in prison for any statement deemed as hate speech, as decided by the court on a case-by-case basis.

Last week, a local politician for the major oppositional party, the Sweden Democrats (left of the US Democrats, making them right wing according to Sweden's political compass) was sentenced under that law.

The reason was him stating, with references to research and studies, that somalis as a group have lower IQ than swedes as a group, and therefore may require special efforts to function in swedish society. That constitues hate speech and racially based slander, accoring to the court.

In the courts ruling, which will be used as prejudice for similar cases, it is clearly stated that the truth of the matter is irrelevant to this law. Swedish law for defamation follows the same principle, so it doesn't matter if what you say is verified as true (say f.e. "Politician NN has been convicted for sexual assault and statutory rape"). The court's members which are a couple of politicians and one judge decide.

So a lot of my comments here and on other stacks could actually land me in prison. And right now, backed by the EU, the Socialist Democrats are trying to hurry a new law through parliament while the emergency session rules activated due to Covid are still in place: under that law, any and all criticism of the swedish governement, it's agencies and individual civil servants, and the Socialist Democrat party may constitute a crime. The proposed sentence ranges from heavy punitive fines (greater than for armed assault or rape) to six years in prison (people raping children typically serves 4-6, even when sentenced to longer period).

Oh, and these laws are only used on real swedes and white foreigners, never ME or African migrants, not even when they celebrate the Holocaust or call for genocide against Israel.

Because those 1 500 000 africans and sundry mid-easterners all vote Socialist Democrat.

Yeah. I always wondered if my parents really gave a shit about me and then they evicted me when I was evicted from my primary residence due to being unvaxxed. They evicted me for the same reasons and I thought maybe they just fell under the spell of the Covid narrative, which they most certainly did. But now that it’s all winding down and it’s clear that it was a con job all along, they refuse to engage with me on the matter. My hopes for an apology are certainly NOT going to be entertained. Their parting comment to me is that I should “just get on with my life” and not to bother them with this failure of moral judgement. I kind of wished I’d never bought it up because now I can see their brilliant yellow belly and complete lack of virtue.
