"For a long time, there have been two types of people: lockdowners and anti- lockdowners. A day is coming when there will only be people who never supported lockdowns. Some of those will deny that such a thing as a lockdown ever happened." - Dr. Bhattacharya back in May.

Do not let them memory-hole the human toll.

Yes. As I understand it, in the years after France was liberated and WWII ended, the number of people who claimed to have been in the Resistance was far greater than the actual number.

In reality, most people kept their heads down, complied, and did what they were told, while a fair number collaborated with Vichy and the German occupation, either for ideological reasons or in an attempt to give themselves an advantage over their fellow citizens. Many known collaborators did not fare well in the aftermath.

My French Godmother WAS part of the resistance but would never talk about it, not even to her husband or kids. "It's in the past", she'd say. My mother and I tried to convince her to write a book about it but she refused. Her stories died with her.

Unfortunately, they did that to a number of women who were merely suspected or accused of having relationships with German officers or soldiers. But of course there were many false accusations and misunderstandings, and the retributions got out of hand.

"Some people say that time heals all wounds, as if the passing of each year helps make the sharp edges of life go smooth. But I can't help but feel like these are the sort of people who trade in useless platitudes and mollifying adages, people whoтАЩve led relatively pain-free lives and havenтАЩt been introduced to lifeтАЩs brutal compromises and forfeitures."

I also want to say, in regards to this poignant paragraph,

that until I lost my brother, father, mother, and sister within a span of five years, I didn't understand loss and grief at all.

Really enjoyed and shared your essay. Thank you for the personal story as well as the beautifully presented facts and figures. We will remember the human toll as we all carry it with us. So many ways to suffer. Take care.
