It's amusing watching the narcissistic imperative to reimagine history to show oneself to have been correct all along, colliding with the awkward records demonstrating the opposite. This entire farce has been highly educational regarding the talents and characters of the people who imagine themselves an elite.

i wonder if it is more propagandistic impulse to shore up credibility and credential or flat out cognitive dissonance rendering such people entirely unable to imagine a past in which they were so wrong and therefore changing their actual memories of it in defense of their own towering self regard?

i'm sure both play a role, but i truly struggle to guess which dominates.

Narcissism requires the use of propaganda and vice versa. I don't think one can exist without the other.

Interesting article. Notice how most of them attempt to make the other person feel guilty? I'm amazed how often this happens in families and is seen as acceptable or even normal behavior. People that love each other don't try and manipulate each other through guilt.

I'm going to have to think long and hard on this one.

In this context, by "propaganda," do you mean knowingly misleading self-promotion?

I'm trying to apply your proof here to the behavior of individual narcissists acting in self-interest.

But a challenging part of analyzing and treating narcissism is the cognitive dissonance, not conscious dishonesty. Narcissists self-dissemble first, because their logic proof doesn't allow for them to be "wrong."

I tend to think of propaganda as entirely cynical.

What do you think of all this?

Expand full comment

Some narcissists / psychopaths are consciously dishonest, especially if their orientation is predatory. Others are clueless all the way down - complete cognitive dissonance to and past the point of absurdity. They can't see themselves as wrong, and they're completely oblivious to how they're being, how much of a hypocrisy-cartoon they are.

They may both act the same in deflection / blame shifting / denial of reality / gaslighting. Some are more oriented towards "self preservation", and when they feel threatened or confronted with something they don't want to face, they flail around in pathetic defensiveness and projection. Either way it's maddening to witness.

It's a fracture / false self at the personality level, not amenable to treatment, (Besides the occasional "unicorn". Of course many have narcissistic qualities, but actual narcissists are only their false self, by nature they can't be genuinely empathic or self reflective. They will always, always, blameshift. If they apologize, it's a blameshift disguised as apology.)

That psych central article describes the communication really well.

So many similarities between personal abusive behaviors and what's happening in the big picture. One layer is authoritarian control - many narcissistic / psychopathic partners / employers are oppressively controlling and feel justified in being so.

But some narcissists aren't controlling at all, unless they're arguing. What they all have in common is they can't be genuinely self reflective / can't admit being wrong / can't authentically listen / don't want to listen. Blameshift / refuse collaboration or compromise / gaslight - sometimes not intending to break down anyone's reality, just feeling like they're defending themselves, but their view is so skewed they end up denying reality.

So many out there are decoding narcissistic communication, helping people in abusive relationships recognize what's happening. Dr Ramani and Dr Les Carter are knowledgeable and understand so many nuances of these difficult personalities and the havoc they wreak on others. But they don't connect how some of their own descriptions apply so exactly to what's happening to us all - from the gaslighting, history-re-writing lies of the media to the plans of the elites to tag, track, limit us while saying it's for our own good and using guilt - and future faking - to get compliance.

Maggie Russo's substack connects those dots ~ https://maggierusso.substack.com/ ( please subscribe / like. I don't know her, but I appreciate the important links she makes! )

Expand full comment

Well, not all narcissists are unconscious of their condition and so they knowingly lie to maintain the facade of being "normal". These are the types that are usually considered sociopaths, if I'm not mistaken. There's a man on YouTube who posts under the name H.G. Tudor who is this type of narc. While he's entertaining on YouTube I do feel sorry for any of his close associates who have to deal with him on a daily basis.

But the type you're talking about is the most common that we encounter and so they are definitely the bigger problem.

I am not sure there is a treatment for someone labeled as a narcissist. They see absolutely no problem or issue. They are right and always tell the “truth”. But it is behavior to be aware of.

Problem with this is most will never allow themselves to see what they have done. Have a cousin with acute leukemie after her booster. If she admitted a connection I think it would kill her before the cancer. So even trying to see the silver lining in her situation: maybe she’ll wake up! Is a complete non-starter. And so while I find her fate deserved to an extent, I tend to have a philosophy that we are all connected and what is bad for her will be bad for me and the rest of us. Thus the schadenfreude is tainted.

Expand full comment

I think you are right in this case. I do agree with Bandit that they'll always be self righteous. However they will have to live with being the last to "know". And the zealots will be exposed as frauds. I posted somewhere else that those are their two biggest fears in life.

They may not eat their humble pie publicly, but they will internally. That's a living hell for those types of people.

Some regular folks who got the first two shots are a bit more circumspect. Most of my friends and family did not take the booster and are now seeing that their initial decision was a mistake. That doesn't mean they want to talk about it though. BTW, three of them are experiencing Vax injuries. They told me that unsolicited.

The over-ardent zealots are a different story. They'll always be self righteous. But who cares we have the receipts. If nothing else they will have egg on their face and been exposed as automatons who can't think for themselves

It was a weird realisation, that a whole bunch of people could sort-of form a group united in being or feeling "individualist" - I think that was part of the wake-up call all those decades and decades ago, that any group must needs be to some degree centered around a collectivist and conformist ideal, even voluntary such.

The most blame need to be placed at the feet of the American public. We, yes me included, allow apathy to degrade the representative democracy in two distinct ways. One is long-standing and the other is novel. 1. Improper education that results in a population not mentally equipped to participate in a representative democracy. 2. Standing for corrupt elections that allow treachery-focused individuals in positions of power.

Expand full comment

How does one quantify blame?

The American public has been getting a 24/7 buffet of propaganda. It was wall to wall. Turn on the radio, it's PSA's and news reports. commercials, and shows surrounding the narrative. Turn on the TV and sporting events, commercials sporting mask wearing, news reports giving us the case rate play-by-play and talking heads reinforcing constantly the penalty of the treasonous activity of having an independent thought.

Social media, yes our "friends" were complicit sharing stories of businesses that are not "with" the program, those of us who cared to offer facts that contradicted the main narrative were subsequently unfriended and given a litany of profanity at times at how selfish we were.

we were cajoled, manipulated, insulted, herded, threatened, and told that we were "in this together." The implication being that anyone who had a thought or facts that contradicted the narrative were dissidents and enemies. Family and friends of years were now looked on with suspicion for the crime of disagreement.

It is true in a way that blame rests with us, for we end up with the government we deserve. Are we still worth the freedoms that our founding documents claim to protect?

Expand full comment

Good analysis. We ARE still worth it and if the USA falters, the rest of the world for quite some time. I’m convinced the majority of people want things to improve and unfortunately, the standard of living in the west, USA specifically, is being undermined and will plummet very quickly. People can stop the erosion of their freedoms through an honest electoral process. If the general population doesn’t demands that then you get the type of leadership we currently have.

The corrupt media, including social media, is massively corrupt in that they have abandoned objectivity a long tims. Not enough people became enraged, so here we are.

The double-edged nature of the issue is that bogus elections and bullshit media turn many cynical and voila, more @%&ed-up government. We better figure it out sooner because there won’t be a later.

Expand full comment

I agree with you in principle. We are worth it., but right now there are a lot of us who feel beaten down, frustrated, helpless traumatized, impoverished, and impacted by the last two years of mass psychosis.

I don't know how fast this plummeting will occur. I've heard the doomsayers, at the same time as being cynical, I also believe that "necessity is the mother of invention." If needs arise, then innovation will follow. We were warned before the supply chain issues that because it was largely computerized and time sensitive, that meant it was vulnerable. So it is my supposition that as it becomes a greater problem, more localized and less vulnerable innovations will be made to counter it. We'll learn to "do without" certain things and those items we truly need, we will find a way to get them ourselves.

I don't think that an honest electoral process will stop the erosion of our freedoms. Most of what we are dealing with are unelected aspects of our system. We need to cut those. Did we elect Fauci? What about those that advised local governors?

The problem is that the machine of government has a tendency to feed itself, and like us Americans, government has an obesity problem. How many politicians are really for our government going on a diet? We should be voting against legislation as our default, and we should revisit old legislation and get rid of it as well Here in Georgia, Kemp kept extending the emergency powers, but bought into a lot of the BS being fed him by his advisors. He talked out of both sides of his mouth about masking. He was against government mask mandates, but made a tour of Georgia showing proper mask etiquette.

Yes, the media have abandoned objectivity and so they need to be held accountable. We need a media that won't ignore the truth and facts because they don't match their narrative. If the studies and charts showed that any of this worked, and that these actions were necessitated by data showing that an agreed upon threshold of death required behavior to change of all it's citizens, then I would be agreeable to many of these policies.

Last note: One of the biggest arguments as to why we should do these things like social distancing and masking is "what would it hurt?" But if we adopted that attitude there is a lot of stupid pointless and ridiculous BS we could do on a given day. My example was the Sesame Street example of Ernie putting a banana in his ear to prevent alligators. But another example was circling a lamp post a number of times to stop migraine headaches.

Expand full comment

So here we are in 2022. People are being killed in significant numbers directly and indirectly by an illegitimate federal administration and bureaucracy. Even with the specter of death, American citizens are not spending the time questioning the federal governments role in all this. Just an hour a day of self-education would help. Why there aren’t mobs marching on a daily basis in the Capitol and many state government centers is beyond me.

Expand full comment

I look at it as a law of physics. An object at rest tends to stay at rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in motion. We have been complacent (at rest) for a long time, so the default is to remain at rest.

I think part of the problem is that people ascribe benevolence to a government based on which party is in power, when in truth both parties main motive is to obtain and maintain power. Because of the way the conservatives are portrayed in the media, most of their technique for obtaining power is to convince the media and public at large that they are not as offensive as they are portrayed to be. They spend most of their time reacting or preemptively responding to real and imagined criticisms of the left.

In truth, we should all be voting for no confidence in most if not all of our government both elected and unelected and that the power should shift to more localized venues such as state, county, and even city government.

Expand full comment

Well stated. Hydropower is the analogy I like to use. Water at rest provides benefit but to get energy from water you need to apply work in the form of elevation and/or pressure. Our socioeconomic system is like water. No work applied and it will find its lowest energy level and be least beneficial. It takes work applied to the system to raise its potential benefits.

Applying work to something that doesn’t produce nearly instant tangible benefits isn’t where the mindset of USA society is right now. Can that change?... hopefully.
