He told me he learned forest management from the native Americans who used the high county in the summer to pasture their stock. When fall came and they left the high country they set fire to it. John quit the Park Service rather than take a pension because of the forest management practice the "educated" rangers, who he called ninety day wonders, implemneted. The forest does need to burn. Unfortunately, as the urban populations impinge upon the forests, as John commented on, prescribed burns is a much more difficult task and will require thoughtful intervention.
