The only things I'd add, having lived and fought fires here since 1980 are that a) the mis-management of the forest and brushlands of the west, coupled with b) a dramatic increase in human caused ignitions, complicated with c) exponential growth at the wildland urban interface, and d) further complicated by a significantly risk adverse mindset by fire leadership, why western fires are increasing in size.
It is a complicated picture to be sure. Improving any one of the factors would reduce the acres burned, but one in particular, appropriate forest fuels management would make a significant positive impact.
Not one of the fire agencies wants to do the work, because !FiReS EVeRywHerE!!! panic sells, drives budgets higher and higher and brings faux respect. Cutting brush, thinning overgrown unhealthy forests, harvesting timber, grazing livestock, building fuel breaks around communities, isn't sexy, it's hard dirty work.
Sadly, I've been working with people like this since the 90s. Although, they did use the excuse that they had a college degree (so did I) and therefore it wasn't "their job." (But evidently, it was my job.)
You touch on the true culprit: panic sells the crisis economy... being oldschool, raised on a farm established on raw river washed almost wilderness, I understand how satisfying hard dirty work can be when you have a good team. That amazing sense of togetherness is what is being disrupted. I'm old enough to remember when parents had Chicken Pox parties. Kids were deliberately exposed to someone with chicken pox, in order to get it over with.
I also remember reading an opinion by a doctor, who stressed that it was only an untested opinion, that allowing oneself to be exposed to some septic conditions and thereby ingesting "germs" was good practice for your body in learning to fight more serious disease.
The only vaccine I recall getting as a child was the polio vaccine. There may have been others. I had chicken pox and regular measles, and survived! This was in the early 1960s.
This seem to be a USA/Canada-problem, so the answer to the whys are probably local/domestic and has very little to do with the actual forests or climate/weather, and I'm not ruling out tacitly approved semi-sanctioned eco-terrorism or mining companies wanting to get at mineral deposits under forests.
Here, a forest owner is obligated to clear underbrush et c at regular intervals as needed, and it's never been a problem since it's in the owner's best interest to do so. All the cut-down saplings, lopped-off branches and other small stuff is then left on the forest floor, mostly. (Some of it goes into the making of wood pellets, as does cleared smaller trees, the ones taken down to improve growth of the larger ones.)
Also, clear-cutting is illegal and has been for, oh I think 30+ years now. It works much better, leaving the prime specimens standing and letting them help re-seed the area than it does using purely aritficial means.
Some 15% of the total forested area (not counting fjells and lakes, obviously) is set aside as nature preserves where no logging or clearing of any kind takes place, and those areas are the ones the /least/ afflicted by fires.
Perhaps you should look at Sweden for a positive example of how to combine for-profit forestry with real environmental concern and having a plethora of species, including red-listed ones, with very few forest fires.

So, there's a guy out there by the name of Clif High that does what he calls "predictive linguistics" via computer. He's on substack and Bitchute. In the past, his predictions have been wildly off, and his ideas are really unconventional [read as "many would say crazy."] Lately his predictions have been somewhat better.
In one of his latest podcasts, he admitted that those in power have been manipulating the language -- and the world-- for a long time and subverting our nation. However, he just realized that the subversion of science began in the 50's, which is when, in his view, this whole "climate scam" was started. So it's a long term process. Kind of like communism.
My next door neighbor growing up was Sequoia National Park's first ranger. He told me he learned forest management from the native Americans who used the high county in the summer to pasture their stock. When fall came and they left the high country they set fire to it. John quit the Park Service rather than take a pension because of the forest management practice the "educated" rangers, who he called ninety day wonders, implemneted. The forest does need to burn. Unfortunately, as the urban populations impinge upon the forests, as John commented on, prescribed burns is a much more difficult task and will require thoughtful intervention.
I'm becoming increasingly convinced that these sorts of policy "failures" are deliberate.

The only vaccine I recall getting as a child was the polio vaccine. There may have been others. I had chicken pox and regular measles, and survived! This was in the early 1960s.
This seem to be a USA/Canada-problem, so the answer to the whys are probably local/domestic and has very little to do with the actual forests or climate/weather, and I'm not ruling out tacitly approved semi-sanctioned eco-terrorism or mining companies wanting to get at mineral deposits under forests.
Here, a forest owner is obligated to clear underbrush et c at regular intervals as needed, and it's never been a problem since it's in the owner's best interest to do so. All the cut-down saplings, lopped-off branches and other small stuff is then left on the forest floor, mostly. (Some of it goes into the making of wood pellets, as does cleared smaller trees, the ones taken down to improve growth of the larger ones.)
Also, clear-cutting is illegal and has been for, oh I think 30+ years now. It works much better, leaving the prime specimens standing and letting them help re-seed the area than it does using purely aritficial means.
Some 15% of the total forested area (not counting fjells and lakes, obviously) is set aside as nature preserves where no logging or clearing of any kind takes place, and those areas are the ones the /least/ afflicted by fires.
Perhaps you should look at Sweden for a positive example of how to combine for-profit forestry with real environmental concern and having a plethora of species, including red-listed ones, with very few forest fires.
Having been raised largely on a 2000 acre homestead in the barbarian northlands back in the late Pleistocene, I can attest that forest management was not optional if one wanted to avoid becoming a barbecue feast for the local bear, wolverine, or, preferably, feral feline population.

So, there's a guy out there by the name of Clif High that does what he calls "predictive linguistics" via computer. He's on substack and Bitchute. In the past, his predictions have been wildly off, and his ideas are really unconventional [read as "many would say crazy."] Lately his predictions have been somewhat better.
In one of his latest podcasts, he admitted that those in power have been manipulating the language -- and the world-- for a long time and subverting our nation. However, he just realized that the subversion of science began in the 50's, which is when, in his view, this whole "climate scam" was started. So it's a long term process. Kind of like communism.

My next door neighbor growing up was Sequoia National Park's first ranger. He told me he learned forest management from the native Americans who used the high county in the summer to pasture their stock. When fall came and they left the high country they set fire to it. John quit the Park Service rather than take a pension because of the forest management practice the "educated" rangers, who he called ninety day wonders, implemneted. The forest does need to burn. Unfortunately, as the urban populations impinge upon the forests, as John commented on, prescribed burns is a much more difficult task and will require thoughtful intervention.
I'm becoming increasingly convinced that these sorts of policy "failures" are deliberate.
After all, as gato notes, gigantic, destructive fires are the perfect PR opportunity to push the "climate change" narrative on a population that is increasingly illiterate, innumerate, ignorant and enjoys the attention span of a mayfly.

The MidWestern Doctor has a substack on how to prevent the air from damaging your lungs. I was in Petaluma in summer 2019, which is always the staging area for fire personnel during Sonoma County fires, and the air wasn't smoky so much as it smelled like a burning recliner factory or a Home Depot. Must be scary.

it entails both expert knowledge of ecosystem management principles as well as hard, dirty manual labor - clearing underbrush, dead trees, conducting (safely, one hopes) prescribed burns on a periodic basis. typically the latter parts of the task list are delegated to part time laborers at as close to minimum wage as they can manage to offer and still attract semi-qualified job applicants... this task is no longer being performed in quite a lot of places because no one wants the responsibility of paying for said poorly paid laborers to come out of their ever-decreasing budgets... short sighted, to say the least. wildfire response, cleanup and insurance costs are several orders of magnitude higher than just paying for the forest management workers to start with...
Used to be college kids on summer break did this sort of work. Pay was better than slinging burgers at the Golden Arches Supper Club.

The recent increase in atmospheric CO2 caused the earth to green by about 30%. Plants love the stuff.
Over the history of the earth, CO2 has had its ups and downs, but the long term trend of the last several million years has been a decrease in CO2. At the start of the industrial age it was 270 ppm (parts per million), but now it's around 400 ppm. That's a good thing, because when CO2 levels drop to 150 ppm plants can no longer survive, and all life on earth dies. Humans are unintentionally saving the biosphere by emitting CO2.
Well now, I hope you have some smelling salts (and maybe a little brandy), because this makes so much sense I may faint. Be patient with me, making sense has become very rare over the last 3+ years.😉
