yes, there's definitely something to that especially as he is also entering the paid longform content space. it's not censorship for CBS to not promote NBC on air. it's sort of a shame that they are coming into conflict and that they will not be useful interlocking spheres for mutual promotion and longer, but that's the nature of competitive markets. sometimes interests diverge.
Well, I was kicked off of Twitter for supposed "hateful conduct" for saying that trans people were just regular people who have become mentally sick with lies, and I don't think we should remain silent while Mulvaney is paraded about as the pride of our culture. No violent threats, no cursing, no slandering, yet I was told to delete the offensive tweet if I wanted back on. Elon may have good intentions but his employees are still acting like activists; and until he places handpicked people, devoted to free speech, in the appeals department, only the high profile accounts will be safe.
I kind of doubt that criticisms of trans ideology would bother Musk, considering that his son, who wants to be seen as a girl, has publicly disowned him. No, I think Musk is simply not aware of what's going on; or if he is, he's having a hard time reining it in. If he were smart (heh, heh), he'd at least move the appeals team out of SF and set them up in Texas where he might find people who understand what free speech is. I did like how he handled the BBC recently.
I think the nature of the forum is different enough that there is plenty of room in the market for both. He allows cross-posting from many other sites, so why not let users do the same with this one? That's just part of the nature of social media. The users determine the content, unless the site specifies that it will be heavily curated. Users value maximum transparency about such things. Back when the MSM news shows were heavily promoting Twitter, before Elon bought it, I began to suspect that it was being curated by the same group of political actors. Now that they are regularly trashing it, it's pretty clear that's no longer the case. I hope Musk comes to see that Substack is not an enemy, but a potential ally against the forces of censorship hounding him.
I was under the impression that Musk reinstated the ability to link to substack or stopped blocking it or...within a few days of the uproar.
I opened a twitter account when Steve Kirsch was reinstated and asked us to follow him. I never tweeted. I deleted my twitter account soon thereafter when I heard that Elon was rebranding twitter the 'X Corp.'. That's supposed to be the 'everything-app' like the Chinese WeChat. Although I'm not at all familiar with WeChat, I think it does a lot of things including give users a social credit score. Along with CBDC's, which are already being trialed (look at the WEF's Project Icebreaker), this sounds quite ominous to me.
I'm still open minded about Elon but I view him with suspicion. He does some things that seem great but then I hear about things like this X Corp and I am become very suspicous.
Not too sure. All other media is posted on Twitter, including news and entertainment, hardcopy and digitial. His reaction was impulsive and counter to all he's been advocating. It's not as if he doesn't have the right, he surely does, but he can't play both sides. His later response to Taibbi's post was inaccurate and spiteful.
I think substack will squeeze their tits together for a higher price as they probably want to eventually be bought out and go to another early deadly boring retirement. The grrrrr of fight is not in these tech guys. They're all bottoms.
Substack is in mouse as prey mode. This is the smell of tech love in san francisco spring air.
We're cheering on who's our free speech overlord. It's pathetic how small our dreams got.
For a few days this week, in the Comments sections at the end of a Substack there was a "Re-stack" link next to the Reply link below a comment. Now this seems to have disappeared. I clicked on it a couple of times while it was available and there was no visible change; eventually I discovered that the comments I had "restacked" landed somewhere I would have never gone to deliberately. There was no way to delete them individually (I looked), so I ended up deleting the whole set. What if I'd had 300 "restacks" and needed to delete just one???
In any case, it was totally unclear where these "restacks" were going, and -- more importantly -- who got to see them, or how anybody would become aware of their existence.
Zero interest in this kind of stuff here. Substack, please just stick to what you already do so well.
Also, could Substack Nites cannibalize the already excellent long form Substack and just turn it into another shallow Twitter? I came to Substack for a reason...
I think it did (does) have to do with Notes. If you "re-stacked" a comment like this one, it would show up on your Notes, which looks very much like a Twitter feed. But it's unclear how other people find out that you "restacked" something.
I don’t like that Substack includes Covid morons in my feed I only want to see those I’ve subscribed to. Won’t use it off they don’t stop that nonsense.
Realistically, anyone who frequents web sites like this one is already on a list. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the "Gulag Archipelago" (great book for dissidents, even if, as I suspect, to some degree it was anti-Soviet Union propaganda of its era), allow me to borrow this analogy: If the time really come where "the authorities" are rounding up people in the dead of night, given the choice, I am not going to be sitting quietly in my home waiting for the knock. Feel free to fill in the details as you see fit.
The comforting thing is that even if it comes to dissidents being rounded up and shot in the town square, all states that resort to those methods eventually collapse. A totalitarian society is a contradiction. An analogy is a person trying to hold their breath for ever, starved of oxygen they eventually die.
The big challenge, IMHO, is figuring out how to oppose them without becoming like them. If you morph into your opponent in a battle where your opponent's philosophy is "By Any Means Necessary", you have erased the most important distinction between you and them. At that point it is no longer Right vs. Wrong or Good vs. Bad--just Power vs. Power.
We know there must be ways. Otherwise the "bad guys" would always win, and looking at the good things around us, we know that is not always so.
That is morality speaking. When your opponent refuses to abide by the rules of the game, you are no longer obligated to either. It sucks, but it's called the law of the jungle, or the struggle for survival, or whatever. Turns out that nice guys really do finish last.
Well said. On all counts.. And for the record In pissed off, but in WA state it really doesn't matter, because Dems have run this state for so long they have the strangle hold. Mail in ballots for voting started the take over, and no one at the time believed it would be used so nefariously. Well, it was and they did. Republicans are puzzzzys.... I hate it but its true. If we don't fight fire with fire there's no level playing field.
No. Because Republicans believed that would work and the DEMS HAVE OBLITERATED any chance of that. They're psycho, hateful vengeful assholes who stop at nothing to get their way.
The dominance of the longer form thoughts in the ecosystem will likely keep Notes elevated above Twitter nonsense.
Elon did have real competition to deal with, but shot himself in the foot further by limiting speech to combat it. All that he did was to draw more attention to it.

OK but I have to say, I misjudged Elon. He rightly saw competition and I think has a right to self defense.

I think his reaction is due to one of his children being "trans"

I agree- I was confused re the restack option. Is it related to notes?

I know. I'm confused on this feature.
Meh, I like the long format more.
I don’t like that Substack includes Covid morons in my feed I only want to see those I’ve subscribed to. Won’t use it off they don’t stop that nonsense.
try toggling to "subscribed" instead of "home" or "best sellers"
Thank you!
I do not have any covid morons on my feed. ??
In notes? hmmm
really, wow! You're lucky. It's SO irritating.
are you speaking about the upper right corner of "suggested" reads? I think you can somehow go through those and eliminate them
El Gato explained how to be rid of them. It was ONE click. Thank goodness. We're in the middle of a move, and I'm so thankful it was just one click.
NOTES: We Win! Because more EGM is a WIN for everyone!
I really like "i ate your flowers" as the last line...but can understand the zen like quality of the choice.
You mean to tell us civil discourse is still possible!?! Who knew!!!😜
You’ll get yourself on the DHS list of domestic terrorists with rhetoric like that.

I think I have enough on my substack plate now but you all go ahead😁👍🏻
I hope it works out ❤️ I'd love a place for "smart twitter" to talk and share info that's not instantly attacked by losers 🙂
I show up for many reasons but mostly for the snark.
Yeah, but has anyone given you crap for lack of CaPiTaLiZaTiOn yet? 😉
Oh this is great!
I love sharing the little things. Hopefully I think of something worth contributing.
The Haiku is super wonderful
Could it be affected by the RESTRICT act?
