Our friend Gerry Rawlinson suggested this, and I tend to agree:

How to use past data to bolster your narrative.

The Hope-Simpson curve and past covid trend indicates virus will begin decline in the US in roughly 10-14 days with or without mask recommendations or vaccinations, so here's what CDC is doing.

1) Looks at Hope-Simpson curve

2) Realizes nature is about to do it's thing presenting a golden opportunity

3) Issues 'new and improved' mask recommendation based on past trends calming the 'masks forever' crowd

4) Sit back and wait while watching nature do it's thing

5) As cases decline, take credit for issuing recommendations that 'saved' lives while citing decline was due to masks and vaccinations.

yes, i'be been referring to this as the "sun dance" model.

rise at 5 AM, jump around like you mean it, then point to the ball of fire in the sky and clim you made it happen.

certainly possible, but they've shown no signs of being this smart so far and it's obvious the southern states currently experiencing summer surge are going to tell them to go pound sand and then cases will drop anyway.

so this looks like a setup for failure for them if that's their plan.

they're just making desantis look like a stud.

I agree with you here, but the problem comes when the inevitable winter spike across the country kicks in. What will they say then?

Expand full comment

Interestingly, they have already announced they will stop using the PCR in December because of its inability to differentiate between the flu and Covid. Hmmmm

Which really makes you wonder why we're going to use those things for the next six months.........

I keep seeing people day that that's the reason for the test being discontinued. Where can I find more on that?

Expand full comment

Only the CDC test will be discontinued, and it's alarming they have been using it this long considering the early issues with accuracy and contamination in early 2020. Dozens of PCR tests available from other vendors remain in use. The real issue here is a money grab: they're going to combine COVID and flu testing into a "multiplex" test that they can charge more for (e.g. multiple DX/lab codes), which is likely why certain famous people bought a testing company.

But nothing we do will stop the rise in cases in winter. Will they just say we're not masking hard enough or something, then like magic we will suddenly "beat" it at the same time as last year?

those tend to be in the blue states up north and a lot of the election law will be passed by then.

i doubt they care at that point. they'll find some new yarn to spin

They don't have to do anything here in WA. We had our defining moment during the 2004 governor's election. The R won the count and the recount, but not the third recount, which was obviously enough to stop counting and declare a winner. Democrats haven't lost since then.

I think the rest of the country got a whiff of what we've been dealing with for decades.

That's why I don't think this can play out until the 2022 elections. The mitigations will be relaxed again after this cycle of cases completes. They'll say it was their mitigations when of course it wasn't. They will try to enforce mitigations again as the inevitable cases rise in the winter as you say, but we will be so much closer to complete herd immunity that the rise will be miniscule. The one group that is not getting infected are those who have already recovered.

Totally agreed. And it's worth pointing out this is exactly what we expect -- each wave is smaller than the last because fewer people remain susceptible.

I'm not sure I'm buying this one Bad Cat. I don't believe this is all point of an elaborate plan. To me it looks like moral panic combined with the cognitive dissonance in refusing to admit that every measure taken over the last year plus had no effect against the virus, only adverse effects to the public.

Always remember Hanlon's razor: "never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity"

Meanwhile, the liquidity event at Pfizer just keep on giving to the corporate oligarchy: "During a July 28 second quarter earnings call, Pfizer told investors the company has increased its revenue projection, now expected to be in the range of $78 to $80 billion. The company projected revenue from its COVID vaccine alone will hit $33.5 billion — a 29% jump from the previously estimated $26 billion. Pfizer registered $7.8 billion in COVID vaccine sales in the second quarter, bringing total worldwide sales so far this year to $11.3 billion. The new profit forecast doesn’t include a contract struck last week with the Biden administration to provide an additional 200 million doses to the U.S."

I'm wondering if we could appease our "leaders" if we just got rid of elections, and let the people who are currently in just stay there for life? And of course their children would automatically rise to the seats of power as well. Would that be enough for them to leave us alone? Maybe then they would take mercy on us and stop ruining the lives of the peasants just to score election points and invent excuses to change "election" rules more in their favor. In all actuality little would change from installing an official aristocracy as our so-called "democratic elections" result in almost no actual change in policy or personnel. And since our entire government is 100% consumed with "winning the next election and we will burn down the country to do it," maybe we should just give up on our little American Experiment. King Gonna King.

Before Covid I couldn’t understand some libertarians’ promotion of the idea of a monarchy being better than what we have now.

I’ve come around to the idea after all this, though.

well, monarchy is predictable, and you know exactly where you stand....

bc covid hysteria the free range 2020 election is not above reproach, as ethical skeptic observed caesar's wif e should be.

of course, the c19 flu will impact the election 16 months from now. with out a free range election that is reprehensible the democrats won't have either house.

if they pull it off in 2022.....

Huh, I hadn't thought about that reason for the new COVID "surge" hysteria, but it makes sense under the umbrella of "we don't want to give that toy back because our parents will never give it to us again."

Yup grifters gonna grift and they will go for the jugular this fall/winter. One or two more kicks at the COVID can and then get ready for full court press on the new green deal and equal outcomes, Err equity, should they retain the house and senate in 2022
