Christmas is what you make of it. It can be magic, it can be lonely, it can be materially grasping, it can be selfless giving. Like everything in life, it's up to you. Where I am, the Christmas Season starts the First of October and ends when I say it ends. I LOVE the decorations and lights. One year I left my tree up until Easter. This year, no tree. Six cats and three dogs and occasionally their friends. I may be old, but I'm NOT senile...yet...Meowrry Christmas one and ALL!

Expand full comment

Love this. We must make our lives work within what we have and we can do it. Not certain whether I am not going senile, however.

Expand full comment

Senility is mostly just going backwards into early childhood. Enjoy it while you can get away with it! If you're not having fun with life, you're doing it wrong!

🤣❤️ you are a love Mickey! Merry Christmas!

Good advice Mickey!

I agree. If I am not having fun, I must fix that. Besides, I am fine and everyone else is flying off the rails. :)

Merry Christmas, Mick!

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts regard decorations (and other things). My decorations stay up as long as I want.

We leave ours up all through January now so the youngest can have her birthday presents under the tree. And I love having more light on dark mornings! By February it’s less needed.

I'd've taken a shitload of coal in my nice fresh laundry rather than having had to see that face on Christmas.

But never mind. Merry Christmas to all, gey gezint kim gezint, don't fight with your idiot relatives and be very, very admiring of my Christmas vest, all crocheted by me and my absolute masterwork. It features a parlor scene from The Nutcracker and the tree is covered with sugar mice which the cat on the mantelpiece is desperately trying to reach.

Merry Christmas SCA. I appreciate your comments. I’ll bet that vest is stunning.

And to you and yours and everyone you love and care about.

I am so grateful for your camaraderie. We found ourselves a great table to sit around in the vast backyard of SubstackLand.

I am jelly. I can just imagine the brilliance of your fine craft artistry

My enthusiasm often far outpaces my skill. I had to redo that vest twice because I have this habit of continuing to drive down a road that is obviously wrong from the start but I just can't stop in time...

But I tell ya, this is my greatest. I even got a roaring fire in the fireplace, with the broken Nutcracker to one side and the Sugarplum Fairy to the other.

Rosemary dear, wishing you a very Merry Christmas.

aaakkk stoppppit, you are killing me.

I am getting in my car right now. put on the tea and there better be pie <3

I baked the shortbread and the blondies last night. Starting on the bread for the stuffing after I have my tea.

Huzzah!

It was a hit with all assembled at the Chrismukkah feast!

Expand full comment

That vest must be stunning! I can almost see it!

Expand full comment

I was inspired to start from this pattern: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fairytales-cal

The initial rounds represent The Little Match Girl and The Steadfast Tin Soldier and that's where I stopped for the back of my vest.

The front is all freehanded. There's the parlor, and the fireplace, and the hearthrug with a cat sleeping on it, and the Christmas tree, and the Nutcracker, and the Sugar Plum Fairy, and lots and lots and lots of sugar mice plus The Mouse King. And on the mantel is the Clock and The Owl, and a cat of course.

And doing stuff like this is why I have remained sane throughout this perhaps our now no longer neverending Plague Era.

Plus the comradeship of the assembled of course. That may be the most important part...

That, I’d love to see

I wish I could share the video of my middle son annoyingly screaming so excitedly about his new bicycle and then turning camera to my littlest one to see what he thought only to see him projectile vomit all over the floor and toys. Pretty epic Christmas video that will go down in our Christmas history. Merry Christmas all!!

Expand full comment

It hasn't been my best Christmas. Projectile vomiting started Friday night and continued thru' Sat. I had norovirus though I didn't know that's what it was. I gave it to my caregiver and a friend of mine. Kind of messed up planned Christmas celebrations. I got to go to my concert on Sunday and a little open house on Tues. Too many people sick to pull off the Christmas dinner. Here's a story from Shreveport News about it. https://www.shreveporttimes.com/story/news/2024/12/02/2024-norovirus-outbreak-in-u-s-find-out-more-about-the-virus-here-syptoms-spread-stomach-bug-flu-cdc/7670235200

I’m so sorry. It’s so awful. I had a big Christmas party with an elf band and Santa on Saturday night and half the people were puking the following evening (including my kids and me- my hubby managed to escape it until last night). It’s nasty!!! I hope you’re feeling better. I’m laying here in bed with my kids still not feeling the best.

Expand full comment

Sorry back at you. Mine lasted the requisite 2 days, then was just weakness for the 3rd day. By the fourth I wanted to eat and by the fifth I had red chile and beans. Yay. Doing OK. I think people pay for this. It's like a purge. If I don't overdo, my stomach and gut feel better than before the norovirus.

Expand full comment

That’s what I told my husband. This is a great diet!! Haha

Expand full comment

Not so sure about "great" but it is a diet of sorts.

Fair:)

Such a bummer! I got it Christmas Eve so basically couldn’t celebrate. Didn’t know what it was and guessed food poisoning as I didn’t know anyone else who had it. Then the Friday morning after Christmas our eldest got it and that night my husband got it. Totally ruined the holiday week. Randomly, the youngest never got sick. Very weird virus. Oh well, it’s over now and I am catching up on substack which is always enjoyable. Happy New Year!

Expand full comment

It was, but my gut, as long as I don't abuse it and eat in moderation, actually feels better than before I got norovirus.

That’s good news! It took me a while to get back to equilibrium. 😅
